While PAX East 2024 marks the lifting of the COVID-19 restrictions, prioritizing your health remains paramount. Penny Arcade and I strongly advise attendees to carry a mask for safety. Even without the specter of COVID-19, other pesky ailments like the common cold or flu can damper your PAX experience. Stay vigilant and protect yourself, along with those around you. How Do I Acquire A Badge For PAX East 2024
By now, you should already have your tickets for PAX East 2024. Especially since they tend to go fast, but if you don’t have any, don’t despair. It’s not too late, and your first place should be to head over to the official PAX East website. The single-day badges are $67. However, the four-day badges went up a few dollars and are priced at $250. At the time of this guide, all of the single-day and 4-day badges are still available.
If, by chance, the badges sell out, you can try your luck at the following places.
- eBay
- Reddit’s PAX Pass Exchange (highly recommended)
When Should I Expect My PAX East 2024 Badge to Arrive?
PAX/Reedpop typically sends out badges for PAX East about one month before the event. This means that at the time of this guide, the badges should be going out soon or are already in transit. Keep checking your physical mailbox. If you don’t get your badge(s) at least two weeks before PAX East, contact Reedpop and PAX at pax_questions@paxsite.com.
Is There A PAX East 2024 App
There sure is! You can find this on iOS and Android by searching for PAX NAV in their respective storefronts or by going to the following links.
Google Play – PAX NAV
Apple App Store – PAX NAV
As of March 6, 2024, the PAX NAV was updated to reflect PAX East 2024. Ensure you download the app; it’s super helpful and includes the entire floor map, event locations, and more.

What Is There To Do At PAX East 2024
PAX East 2024 is the ultimate gaming event on the East Coast, drawing thousands of enthusiasts annually. It’s a gamer’s paradise, from playing the latest games and exploring demos to discovering indie developer projects, attending panels, splurging on swag, and more.
To make the most of your experience, I recommend downloading the PAX NAV app that I recommended earlier and creating a plan of attack. With so much to do, some preparation goes a long way.
Bring Plenty Of Cash
Additionally, be sure to bring plenty of money. While credit and debit cards are accepted, cash can be more convenient, especially considering the BCEC’s unreliable Wi-Fi. Plus, having cash on hand may give you some room to negotiate prices with vendors.
I also wouldn’t recommend the ATMs at the convention center. Get your cash elsewhere, or you’ll be waiting in line and risk the chance of the ATMs running out of money.
Plenty of Panels to Attend If Nothing Else
While attending all the panels at PAX East would be fantastic, it’s not feasible. Instead, I recommend checking the official PAX East website and the PAX East app to see which panels are scheduled and plan accordingly.
I’ve learned that the popular panels tend to fill up quickly and have long lines, and not everyone will be able to enter. During a few PAX East events, I sat in line for hours to ensure I could get a seat. If there is a panel that you are set on attending, I’d consider lining up 2 to 3 hours before it starts. While it may seem like a significant time investment, it’s part of the PAX East experience.
If waiting in line isn’t feasible, check if the panel will be streamed online. Many of the larger panels are often streamed, allowing you to catch the content without waiting in line.
The PAX East 2024 Panels and Concert schedule has been posted, so be sure to check it out and plan which events you’ll want to attend.
It’s Cold In Boston, So Dress Warm
Please, please, please, be sure to check the weather before heading out to PAX East 2024! It will likely be chilly as it’s held in Boston, MA, and is located by the seaport. And I can tell you from my PAX East 2023 adventure that it was chillier than expected. This year’s event is held towards the end of March 2024, so we’re still in the Winter season, so don’t expect any warm weather. Bring plenty of warm clothes: sweatshirts, hoodies, insulated pants, etc. Unless you are already inside the convention center, I don’t want to see anyone wearing shorts and a tank top.
You don’t want to wear anything super warm in the convention center, or you’ll be cooked alive.
Maybe Don’t Bring A Bag With You
You will be subjected to a bag check if you come to PAX East 2024 with a backpack or bag. Every entrance has one, so there’s no getting around it. To help make the line move as quickly as possible, open your bag so the people running the checking stations can see what’s inside the bag. The sooner you do this, the faster you can get inside the building.
A helpful tip is not to bring a bag. Unless you’re there as media/press and are carrying tons of equipment, just come without a bag. Many of the booths at PAX East 2024 will give out free bags to put all that swag you’ll collect, so you likely don’t need to bring one. If you must bring a bag, then bring a folding bag or a drawstring sack that you can stuff into your pockets and pull out when needed.
Please Wear Deodorant and Shower
Let’s be honest: nobody enjoys dealing with the stench of someone who neglects proper hygiene, skips deodorant or skips daily showers. Events like PAX East often attract individuals who overlook these basics, and unfortunately, it can detract from others’ experiences. Let’s avoid being ‘that person’ and make sure to wear and bring deodorant. Even though it might be chilly outside the BCEC, it gets warm inside, leading to inevitable sweating and potentially unpleasant odors. Please, let’s all be considerate of one another, practice good hygiene, and avoid becoming the subject of Tweets and internet posts about the prevalence of unpleasant body odor.
Beware The Long Restroom Lines
At PAX East and all of the other PAX events, there are always several certainties: long lines for panels, games, food, and, of course, restrooms. If you need to use the restroom, try to locate one that’s off the beaten path, as it will likely have shorter lines. Restrooms near the showroom floor or close to panels tend to be overcrowded, with people needing to use them as well.
Let me tell you a secret: Don’t hold it in. When you realize you have to relieve yourself, head to the restroom. Everyone else is likely doing the same, but they would rather wait until the last minute so they don’t lose out on anything. Go when you have to go.
Play Nice With Others At PAX East 2024
Everyone attending PAX East is there to have a good time – you, me, the fruit vendor, the cabbage vendor… everyone. That means being on our best behavior. No shoving, knocking people over, cutting in line, stealing, fighting (unless it’s in-game), or harassing anyone. Sure, you can act like a jerk, but use your discretion.
Remember, there are Enforcers and police officers around who won’t hesitate to escort you out of the event if needed. And if that happens, you may not be allowed back in for the remainder of the event, which would be suboptimal.
Speaking of Enforcers…
Don’t Be Jerks To The Enforcers
The Enforcers, those folks in red shirts labeled “Enforcer,” aren’t the bad guys. They might seem pushy sometimes, but keeping the event running smoothly is part of their job. These volunteers dedicate their time to making PAX East the best it can be.
Even if you don’t always agree with everything they do, remember they’re there to assist you. If they ask you to move out of a certain location or stop you from taking pictures of all those cosplayers because you’re taking up space, do what they ask. They are looking out for you and everyone else.
During one PAX East, an Enforcer noticed I was tired and bought me a bottle of water. It was a kind gesture that made a difference. Be kind to them; they’re there for you. You might even make a new friend.
So, let’s keep it cool and have a blast!
Take Care Of Yourself, Please
PAX East 2024 takes place over the course of four days, and it’s natural to want to explore everything it offers. However, neglecting your well-being can dampen your enjoyment. Prioritize adequate sleep, nutritious meals like breakfast and lunch, and staying hydrated throughout the day.
If fatigue sets in, remember that the convention center provides numerous spots to rest and relax. Be kind to yourself; pushing too hard can diminish the event’s fun.
Opt for a pair of comfortable footwear to avoid discomfort during long periods of standing. Comfortable shoes are a must! I said it twice, so you understand the magnitude of what I’m saying. Walking Shoes, sneakers or whatever you feel most comfortable with. I’ve yet to see someone wearing heels last an entire day. But, if you’re up to the challenge, be my guest. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Bring Some Amusement With You
Come prepared to pass the time while waiting in lines. Bring along a Nintendo Switch, smartphone, SteamDeck, or anything else that helps you stay entertained. Those lines can get mightily long, and just standing there can get boring.
If friends or family accompany you, discuss the event’s highlights and share your excitement together. Additionally, consider conversing with someone in line who’s waiting just like you. It’s a great way to connect with fellow attendees and make the most of your PAX East experience.
Bring A Backup Battery Charger Or Power Bank
If you rely on your smartphone, laptop, or tablet, be sure to bring a backup battery, power bank, or charger to PAX East. While charging stations are available, empty outlets are abundant for downtime charging. Regarding power banks, bigger ones are usually better unless you’re flying. Airlines typically restrict power banks to 20,000mAh ratings, and some may not permit them at all. Check with your airline to avoid any confiscations; after all, power banks aren’t cheap!
For everyone else who is driving, I recommend opting for the largest power bank available, such as the Anker 20000mAh Portable Charger, which lasts for a day or two of event attendance. It features two full USB ports and two USB-C ports. Alternatively, consider the MAXOAK Laptop 50000mAh power bank for even more power. Yes, it is expensive and heavy, but it is worth it.
If you’re using a laptop with a battery charger, ensure it has enough wattage to charge and power it effectively. The last thing you want is to think your laptop is charging, only to find out it hasn’t.
Bring Your Food And Drink, Or Go Outside And Eat
There are plenty of places to eat at PAX East 2024, both inside the BCEC and outside. However, while purchasing food and drinks at the BCEC is convenient, it’s also quite expensive. To combat this, I recommend bringing snacks and drinks with you if possible. I can’t begin to tell you how many times stashing a few granola bars in my bag has saved me. But if you aren’t like me and granola bars aren’t enough, don’t fret.
If you have the opportunity, consider stepping outside to grab a bite to eat. South Station, located about 12-15 minutes down Summer Street, provides various dining options and, more importantly, is cheaper than what you can find at the BCEC. Alternatively, you can use delivery services like DoorDash or GrubHub to order food at the convention center.
I personally bring a water bottle (after learning my mistakes) and refill it at the water fountains scattered throughout the convention center to stay hydrated without spending extra money.
Here’s a map of places around the area where you can get some food for much cheaper.
Though, nothing beats being able to pick up a piece of mutton. Regardless of the price, I’ll be in line to grab one for myself. Don’t let price rob you of an experience, but be smart as well.
Be Mindful Of The Cosplayers
Cosplayers are a vibrant part of PAX East, showcasing their creativity and passion for the event. From amateur enthusiasts to seasoned professionals, they all contribute to the lively atmosphere. However, it’s important to remember that cosplayers are attendees just like you—they’re there to have fun and enjoy the event.
If you want to take a photo with or of a cosplayer, always ask for permission first. Additionally, if you plan to share their photo online, consider providing them with a business card so they can easily find the photo you took of them and request a copy or see where the photo will be hosted at.
Approach cosplayers respectfully and kindly, and they’ll likely respond in kind. Don’t hesitate to strike up a conversation while snapping a photo. Ask them about their experience at PAX East, compliment their cosplay, or discuss their favorite games. Remember, cosplayers are fellow enthusiasts who share your passion for gaming and geek culture.
Take Note of the Cosplay Weapon Policy
This is super important for cosplayers! If your cosplay has any prop weapons (guns, swords), you need to know the cosplay policy. Otherwise, the security folks will take your prop from you or deny entry.
Be sure to read the policy below or here:
Hate symbols are not permitted at PAX, and PAX will not allow any cosplay, props, clothing, etc. which we determine contain, or are suggestive of, hate symbols. This includes, but is not limited to, historical, game-related, and/or satirical costumes associated with Nazis or other hate groups. PAX shall have sole discretion in determining what constitutes a hate symbol or hate group.
No functional props or weapons are allowed at PAX. Simulated or costume weapons are allowed as a part of your costume, subject to prior approval by convention staff (Enforcers) and compliance with the following rules:
- All costume props and weapons must be inspected and will be “peace bonded” by an Enforcer at the Information booth.
- Live firearms including airsoft, either functioning or de-commissioned, are not permitted.
- Replica firearms made from metal, solid resin/plastic/rubber are not permitted.
- All firearm costume props and weapons must be rendered inoperable and are required to have an orange safety tip at all times.
- Any bow-type weapons must be unstrung or strung with a low-tensile thread. All prop arrows must have soft, non-metal, blunted tips made out of foam or cardboard only.
- Metal swords, knives & spears are not permitted. Any sharp implements are likewise not permitted (to include needles, syringes, ceramic blades).
- Stilts and costumes which include stilts may be prohibited from certain convention areas. Be aware that you may be asked to remove them.
- Costume weapons are for fun! Enjoy your costume, but do not strike, swing at or brandish weapons at other attendees.
What is peace bonding?
“Peace bonding” allows convention staff and Enforcers to tell at a glance that your costume weaponry meets show expectations. Peace bonding is accomplished by attaching one or more colored zip-tie’s to your cosplay weapon(s). We attempt to attach these in a way which will allow you to take pictures etc. without them subtracting from your costume/cosplay. Feel free to work with the Enforcers to peace bond your weaponry in a way that you are happy with!
I will be at the show multiple days. Do I need to get my weapon peace bonded multiple times?
Once your weapon is peace bonded you are all set for the rest of the show!
What about NERF guns?
NERF weapon are allowed if they have been rendered completely inoperable. Convention staff/Enforcers are the final arbiter of whether or not a weapon is inoperable, so please be ready to clearly show and explain what measures you have taken. Make sure to include an orange safety tip!
Look! I covered my metal sword in electrical tape! Is it OK now?
No. Altering or attempting to alter your metal, bladed or otherwise prohibited weapon will not make it acceptable.
Attend Those Parties
While much of the excitement at PAX East revolves around the convention center, plenty of other enjoyable opportunities exist. Numerous parties and meet-ups occur during the event, offering a chance to socialize and unwind in a more relaxed setting.
Check out the dedicated PAX Discord group, where you’ll find information about various parties happening during PAX East. These gatherings provide an excellent opportunity to meet new people and make lasting connections.
If you attend some parties, and I hate to say it, ensure you get some of the drink protectors. There are far too many stories of people having their drinks contaminated by people who don’t respect others. Amazon sells a bunch of them, so keep them handy.
And hey, if you happen to see me, don’t hesitate to invite me to a party! I may not be much of a party-goer, but I’m always up for fun.
Have Fun And Enjoy Yourself
Above all, remember to have fun. That’s why you’ve journeyed to PAX East—to enjoy yourself, forge new friendships, and perhaps even make exciting partnerships. So immerse yourself in the experience, treat everyone with kindness, and try to stay healthy throughout the event—though that might be easier said than done!
With any luck, our paths will cross at PAX East 2024, from March 21st to March 24th, 2024. Should you spot me or any of The Outerhaven crew, please don’t hesitate to come over and say hello! We look forward to seeing you there.
