The Story
The eighth volume of The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses continues summer break. After the aquarium and the pool from the last volume, Komura heads to the bathhouse to clean up because they lost hot water for some reason. While there, he runs into Mie and gets a glimpse at her swimsuit! After this, they head home and have a virtual sleepover. By that, I mean they have a video conversation on their phones until they get tired and fall asleep. From here on out, Komura begins to wonder if each time he sees Mie will be the last time he sees her during summer break.
Of course, that’s not the case. He runs into Mie at the convenience store as she’s looking for some ice cream to eat. She casually mentions the summer festival and how she’s going with her friends. Komura mentions that he has watermelon from his grandparents and invites her over to eat some. Mie is sweaty so Komura has her borrow his room to use some sweat wipes in. While in there, she stumbles upon a photo album of Komura’s and asks to borrow it. Then his mom comes home and she gets the wrong idea… but in a hilarious and good way!
During their conversation, Mie gets a message that her friends canceled on her so Komura ends up going to the summer festival with her instead. Before going, he arrived 30 minutes early to pick Mie up and ran into her Dad. Komura thinks that the hammer of justice is about to come slamming down upon him but her Dad is super cool about him being there and even lends him a jinbei to wear. At the festival, Komura gets her a yo-yo and then they run into Azuma from class. They want to go somewhere else but Mie twists her ankle. Then we get the fireworks… and we all know what happens at festivals with fireworks!
I’ll let you all figure out if it happened or not!
After the festival, Mie mentions that she’s looking to go to an all-girls high school which means Komura and her will be separated!
Characters
Let’s give it up for Mie’s Dad! Yeah, I could start off talking about the whole progression thing between Komura and Mie but Mie’s Dad was the true superstar of this volume. I loved how Komura thought he would get slaughtered at any moment and even mentioned how he practiced his groveling just in case; however, none of that ever came. One thing was said, though, that was very profound and that was Mie’s Dad mentioning how letting Komura borrow a jinbei (and helping him put it on) made him feel like he had a son. Earlier, Komura had mentioned that his parents are divorced so he grew up without knowing what it was like to have a Dad. That one little line hit you right in the feels and was a nice touch. Plus, it came off as if Mie’s Dad was rooting for the two of them to get together. He already seems to approve of Komura, too which is a good thing!
Now, as for the relationship, it’s gotten to the point where the two of them are keenly aware that they love each other. There was one point where Mie said something that sent a clear and distinct signal to Komura that she knows… without making it obvious that she knows. I believe that we are at the stage where the moment we have been waiting for is nigh! Well, given that there are only four volumes left, that moment has to be soon. Still, it was cute watching them act more like a couple in this volume. Now, the question is… who is going to ask who?
Final Thoughts
Given how the volume ended, with Komura realizing that Mie is going to be in a different school, it’s safe to say that the series is going to end with Komura confessing before graduation; however, I don’t think Mie is going to another school. I think her feelings are going to cause her to take a different entrance exam! How cool would it be to make Komura think she’s going away to get him to confess and then when he does, she surprises him and tells him that she’s going to the same school as him! That would be precious and amazing! Let’s hope it ends up going in that direction because it would kind of be a letdown if they get together and end up becoming separated for the next three years regardless.
Outside of that, Mie’s Dad was awesome, and Komura’s mother was awesome, too. She didn’t care one bit what Komura thought and seized that opportunity to try and embarrass him. The fact that his mom wanted to keep Mie was cute, too. It’s really nice to see that Komura and Mie have families that are accepting of one another. In a series such as this, you don’t want that type of drama to weigh down the story. Keep things simple by letting it focus on Mie and Komura slowly and naturally discovering their love for one another without anyone throwing a monkey wrench into things. Having accepting parents seems a little too convenient in some series but not this one. No pushback is the best course for a story like this and I’m glad we’re getting that here as it makes their relationship group just feel so comfortable.
Another great volume!
