The Story
When we last left off, Loid fainted from Anya receiving another tonitrus bolt. What resulted from that was a dream that takes us into Loid’s past! Here, we learn that his real name is nothing more than a black censor bar! I would have never guessed it!
In his past, we see Loid as a kid playing East vs West with his friends until the East starts bombing their hometown. Loid and his mother flee to another town. Loid wants to go back just in case his father returns; however, the East begins to attack that town, too. When everything is taken from him, Loid enters the military until he’s recruited by a military intelligence agent… thus, we see the birth of Twilight.
When Loid wakes up, Anya heads back to school but their bus is running late so Anya helps out Henderson with some tasks in exchange for some tea cakes. She likes them so much that when she gets home, she asks Yor if she can go out and get some. While out shopping, a woman is in danger of falling but Yor rescues her. The woman is so thankful, she gives Yor a bunch of the cakes she bought but she also asks Yor to join her volleyball game. Turns out the woman is in a group of mothers who do activities together. After the game, she asks Yor if she would like to continue to hang out and be her friend.
She then properly introduces herself…. Suddenly, Operation Strix has a Plan C!
Characters
Seeing Loid/Twilight’s past was huge. Even though we didn’t get to see his true name, we saw that he was far from the person that he is today; however, we now know where and why he is so determined at his job. A once happy-go-lucky and, albeit, clumsy kid turned out to be one of the world’s greatest spies/intelligence officers but it wasn’t easy. He really walked the path of hell to get where he was. After his backstory, you sure have a newfound respect for [REDACTED] aka Twilight.
Outside of Loid, Anya seemed to develop a little bit. After being shown some of the imperial scholars by Henderson, Anya has taken a new interest in studying. I’m not sure how long this is going to last but she kind of got a sense of how important it is for her to improve for Loid’s sake. We’ll see if this leads anywhere but it would be kind of funny to see her become some sort of genius student. I doubt it’s going to happen, though.
While Yor didn’t really develop, per se, she did make a new friend and that gives rise to a brand-new character. I’ll refrain from mentioning her name as it would lend itself to spoiler territory but because of this new friendship, I’ll say that Loid has more options now to complete his mission and our little esper is afraid that she’s going to be rendered useless! Maybe this will help her to study more, too? Time will tell.
Final Thoughts
This was a great volume of Spy x Family! Seeing Loid’s background was pretty unexpected but passing out and having a dream was a nice excuse to execute the plot point. Even though we didn’t get his real name, Ronald Spoofy was a pretty nice cover name he used to join the army! Much like the rest of the series, the backstory was a nice mixture of comedy and drama… more of the latter than the former. It’s funny because when I saw the cover, I was like “Oh, who is this new character?” then from the first page, you realize that it was just Loid as a child. Also, we inadvertently got some backstory on another one of our side characters, and even back then he didn’t have much luck with women!
Yor joining a mother’s club should be interesting. Despite the new story arc this brings, it also helps Yor further her understanding of how to be a proper mother. For someone who is just acting the part, she sure is taking this seriously. This also tends to make me believe that she’s going to end up as Loid’s real wife once this story wraps up. Why else would she go through the trouble if she knew that, one day, this would all come to an end? Just seems like a waste of time… especially for an assassin who is trained to discard things that are useless!
All in all, a great volume! This is the beginning of a new arc and it makes me wonder if Loid will have any success here or if Yor is going to do something to where Plan C gets yoinked off of the table. Only time will tell.
