The Story
We are back with the 10th installment of Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits! Here, Aoi is on holiday; however, after heading to the mountains to retrieve some lemon soda alongside Byakuya who also has business there, she discovers a hot springs where the Odanna, Ginji, Shizuna, Tokihiko, Hatori, Oryo, and Nobunaga have all gathered. There, Aoi is asked to work to cook them all a meal despite it being her day off. Some people protest but she doesn’t seem to mind taking on the task.
She makes them some grilled salted sweetfish, some udon Napolitan, and meatballs with summer vegetables. After everyone eats, Oryo gets a bit drunk and talks about how she’s looking for a man which is quite humorous. Just when things were settling down, a massive hexagonal ship appeared in the sky. Ranmaru returned to pick up the members of Orio-ya as it was time for them to return home; however, he didn’t come alone.
This is where we meet Lady Ogondoji. Through her, we learn what the Odanna’s real name is! Before she collects her staff, she makes an announcement that shocks everyone, including Aoi. Aoi tries to prevent the fallout from the announcement; however, she ends up getting taken by Lady Ogondoji. The ship leaves for Orio-ya where Ranmaru states that he would love to put her on display!
Characters
The first big development here happens between Tokihiko and Shizuna. They are finally able to talk and while she decides that she will not be returning to Orio-ya with him just yet, he admires how strong she has become on her own and wishes her luck with her ultimate goal… to find and create a medicinal hot spring to aid those who need healing. It is later revealed the true reason why she wants to do this which is quite noble!
Next, we have our new character Lady Ogondoji. She is a woman who looks young in age but commands respect through her authoritarian rule. She expects all orders to be obeyed without question and when she makes the announcement, any protests will not be heard as her decision is final and will be respected! She is quite a fearsome person and even goes so far as to kidnap Aoi when she tries to stand up and protest against her announcement. It’s more than just an ego thing, though… she’s earned that status because it was revealed that she is not just the founder of Orio-ya but also the original founder/master of Tenjin-ya as well!
Final Thoughts
The only thing that comes to mind with this volume is “Well, that escalated quickly.” We went from feeding some cats in the mountains to having an outdoor feast to being introduced to someone so scary, she could be the final boss in an RPG. Plus, we had her announcement which dropped a bomb on us, and that led to Aoi’s kidnapping. We went from peace to chaos in just a few pages which shows just how quickly things can change in the land of the spirits.
The whole hot spring in the mountains bit did give us some much-needed development between Shizuna and Tokihiko; however, it still felt more like a filler gap before the next story ar,c and with the way this volume ended, it’s safe to say that the next arc has arrived. There are a lot of ways it could go; however, with the Odanna engaged to Aoi, I’m sure he’s not going to sit back and let Orio-ya keep her to themselves. Before he gets her free; however, there are some matters for Aoi to attend to first, one of those being the continuation of her protest over Lady Ogondoji’s announcement.
Somehow, despite the seriousness of the situation, I have a sneaky suspicion that all of these problems are going to be solved with food… just a hunch!
