The Story
The tenth volume of In Another World with My Smartphone sees Touya arranging a meeting between the leaders of all of the nations for a very important gathering… one so crucial that the very fabric of reality hinges upon it.
They all wish to have a party.
Touya creates games like bowling, ping-pong, mahjong, and other fun activities. Brunhild is becoming quite the conversation… so much so that things are starting to expand faster than Touya had anticipated them to. It all starts when Tsubaki returns from Eashen with news that she needs a place for her clan to stay. All 67 members follow her. Soon, Touya finds himself in a diplomatic situation where he establishes trade routes, sets up shops, makes deals with merchants, converts fields into farmlands, constructs buildings, and whatnot.
In between this happening, a phrase shows up. Touya and company are dispatched to check it out and he runs into a female tribe. He assists them but cannot understand their language; however, he comes to learn that their leader, or at least the daughter of the leader, is named Pam… and she likes Touya (big surprise). She shows her affection by…. Biting his neck.
This is the last we see of Pam for now because Touya also finds another piece of Babylon! This time, it’s the Alchemy Lab! We get another robot with, um, ridiculously large assets which Touya has to feel to gain her trust. One kiss later and add Flora to the pile of women he has to lug around. Right when Touya starts using Phrase remains to craft weapons, he is alerted about the country of Ramissh and their overbearing religion.
Right when this happens, he is visited by two priests from the land who wish to establish a connection. Nester is about as scummish as they come while Phyllus is the innocent girl who doesn’t exactly believe what their country is selling. I’ll spare the details but after Nester is sent away, Phyllus experiences something that makes her question her faith… therefore when she goes back, she’s deemed evil beyond saving and sentenced to execution! It’s up to Touya to save the day!
Characters
On a side note, I love how at the very end of the last volume, we get introduced to Norn, Garn, and Nicolas and then we see them for all of like two pages in this volume and they’ve been relegated to the abyss. Great introduction!
Well… we have even more new characters to add to this mountain of a cast so let’s look at them, shall we?
First up is Flora. She’s another robot in charge of the Alchemy Lab of Babylon and, like the other two, she is perverted by making Touya feel her enormous assets… and even whips them out and asks him to touch her bare skin. He refuses, of course, which grants him access just by not being a lecherous perv. Good job, I guess? Of course, she kisses him to complete the registration which draws ire from about 10% of Touya’s massive harem.
Tsubaki fills us in on what happened in Eashen with her clan and how the powers that be led to them being cast out so they were seeking a new home. Of course, Brunhild is the place to be these days so here they are. While it’s more of a catch-up to her story overall, her involvement sets the wheels in motion for Brunhild’s rapid development and expansion so while it may not be character development for her as a whole, it was the catalyst for expansion and even allowed us to see some old characters that haven’t been around for a hot minute.
Next, we have Pam who is your run-of-the-mill spiky-hair girl with tan skin and animal-like markings all over her body. She speaks a different language that even God’s translation ability cannot comprehend so Touya needs an interpreter to communicate. She’s grateful for the help and like every girl Touya meets, she ends up liking him but… she DOESN’T join the harem!? What series am I reading? Is this reality? How can I tell!? Don’t worry… this series is far from over. There’s still time.
Nester and Phyllus are like oil and water. Nester is your typical zealot who enforces religion upon others, feels that the light equates to justice and his god is the one true god that all should kneel down and worship, otherwise, you are a heathen, a purveyor of darkness, the manifestation of evil, and must be sentenced to a cleansing of holy light and flame to be forever scorned in hell for your non-existent crimes!
And Phyllus just says “Yeah, that seems sus…” and now she’s about to die because of it.
Also, I’m not sure if it was mentioned in the last book but Painting Girl in the castle is named Ripple and she apparently got cloned so she’s like the ultimate security system. Renne broke a dish, by the way.
Final Word
Wow… LOTS of stuff to unpack here in just 144 short pages. We have phrase battles, the alchemy lab, diplomatic relations, religious zealots, the rapid expansion of Brunhild, possible new phrase-crafted weapons and armor incoming, more mystery with Ende, and more girls to throw into the harem truck for hauling…. Oh, and griffons and Pegasus horses, too.
Even though it was a lot to take in, there was great entertainment in all of it. I didn’t really get a sense of a major arc here, though. It just felt like a lot of bits and pieces tied together that further other bits and pieces that we received along the way; however, with the way things are going, the Ramissh arc seems to be the major focal point for now. Touya’s interference in their affairs might have long-standing consequences but it could also end up being beneficial as well.
Brunhild is prospering right now which is a good thing but it makes me wonder how much that is going to get in Touya’s way of solving the problem of the Phrase as well as assembling the remaining pieces of Babylon. Right now, those two things seem to be the major endpoints to this story (well, and having Touya possibly return to his world… I think there was some slight foreshadowing done here which may suggest that I could be wrong but we’ll see.)
But on a serious note… I’m so happy that Wiki sites exist for this series because the number of characters keeps growing and I am seriously having a hard time remembering anyone’s names. I mean… I’m known for having large casts in my own books but this… this puts me to shame and I have a feeling that it’s only going to get bigger as time goes on.
All in all… a fun volume that planted seeds for future story arcs. We’ll see how the forced Stay of Execution goes in Volume 11.
