The Story
We pick up with Imaizumi being forced to cross-dress in public. They take him to a restaurant; however, there’s a suspicious guy and girl hanging around outside spying on him through a pair of binoculars. Despite their best efforts, Tsutsumi is standing by watching them like a hawk just waiting for Kurumizawa’s orders to eliminate them. Instead, she gets ordered to capture them and that’s when we learn that the boy is Keita’s brother Keiichiro and the girl is his friend Mayumi. Keiichiro wants to know why his brother is going around dressed like a girl. He gets the explanation in the form of a threat. He gets pressured into keeping it a secret… for now.
We then turn our attention to Sports Ball Day! Hamasaki and Sasaki, who used to play basketball, were pretty good, and won a ton of awards, will be participating in the basketball tournament; however, when asked why they didn’t play anymore, it was all because of Sasaki’s injury from junior high where she hurt her Achilles tendon. Imaizumi learns of it when he wants to start exercising to build up his stamina for… reasons. During the tournament, we meet Gouriki who has a competitive spirit in her… especially against those two.
Most of the volume is dedicated to their match. Once it’s over, we find out that Imaizumi’s air conditioner is broken and it’s going to take three days for them to fix it. The poor kid has to spend his time around four topless sweaty girls. Just when things were about to settle down… Imaizumi is about to receive a VERY unexpected visit at the worst possible time!
Characters
This volume mainly focused on Hamasaki and Sasaki… mainly their past playing basketball, their accolades, and why Sasaki was forced to quit. Hamasaki could have continued without her but they bonded so well that she decided that if Sasaki was going to quit, she was going to do the same. That’s true friendship right there! Despite giving up the game, their competitive spirit continues to burn to this day. It’s also why they look forward to exercising. Because of having to practice for their team, it became like second nature to them. Their love of exercise even rubs off on Imaizumi as it inspired him to get into better shape… again, for… reasons.
Gouriki was just as competitive. Of course, she knew of Hamasaki and Sasaki as their past was well-known. She didn’t want to lose to them and pulled out all of the stops during their game. She even tried her hardest to get them to join the basketball team; however, because of Sasaki’s injury and the promise they made to become the top girls in all of Japan (whatever that means), they turned her down, leaving her a bit disappointed. I’m not sure this will be the last we’ll see of Gouriki but it would be nice to get to know her a little bit more.
Now… let’s talk about Keiichiro, Imaizumi’s big brother. At first glance, he seems pretty straight and narrow. Even though he was creepily spying on his brother from the outside of the restaurant, he was doing it out of concern. He even tried to stand up for himself, but Kurumizawa’s persuasive and dominating vernacular were a bit too much for him to handle. Even though he caved, we learn a little bit more about him… that maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t making sure Imaizumi was okay but rather… for another reason!
Final Thoughts
This was a pretty entertaining volume. Even with the cultured parts toned down, they certainly didn’t shy away from showing some of them. Despite the, ahem, distractions, Hamasaki and Sasaki’s arc was pretty entertaining. Sasaki didn’t let her ankle injury stop her from playing and when it resurfaced during the game (come on, you knew it would, otherwise why go through the trouble of detailing it in her backstory), she pushed through it like a warrior which showed off her competitive nature. Hamasaki was there for her every step of the way, too. It was great to see how they fed off one another and formed this cohesive unit!
Poor Imaizumi! Always getting thrashed about by four gorgeous girls; however, the little story arc with his brother is turning into something I didn’t expect. Keiichiro’s remarks at the end of the volume were interesting, to say the least. Plus, with this unexpected visit coming up and given some of Imaizumi’s backstory in the first volume, I’m expecting all hell to break loose. It probably won’t but that’s what the cliffhanger wants you to believe so let’s play along with it!
All in all, this series is surprising me. From going from an online hentai to something with story and substance is a bit jarring but it’s jarring in a good way. I’m enjoying this more than I thought I would! If you want an edgy slice-of-life series that doesn’t shy away from showing a bare chest or two, then you should heavily consider picking this one up!
