Did Square Enix Just Tease Multiple Chrono Trigger Projects?

The legend continues...?

There are multiple games that you can look at throughout history and go, “Yeah, that’s still one of the best around.” Chrono Trigger is one of those games. It was the perfect mix of incredible talent that led to one of the most influential RPGs ever. And while it did have a “follow-up,” it wasn’t nearly as impactful to the gaming world or the genre. The game was originally released in Japan on March 11th, 1995, and that means today is its 30th anniversary! That alone would be cause for celebration, but Square Enix seems to have something more tangible in mind.

In an official post on its Japanese Twitter feed, Square Enix said the following:

“This timeless masterpiece that transcends generations and is still talked about today was born from a dream project by Yuji Horii of “Dragon Quest,” Akira Toriyama of “Dragon Ball,” and Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of “Final Fantasy.” As we mark the 30th anniversary, we will be launching various projects that go beyond the world of the game over the next year to express our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far!”

As you can imagine, that has many fans intrigued. Some are hoping for an HD-2D style game on the level of Dragon Quest III’s remake. Others would like a full-on new entry in the series that tries to recapture the spirit of the original.

Either way, the publisher has plans, and that’s exciting.
