I’ve made it no secret on the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast that I LOVE the Ace Attorney saga. In fact, during a recent ranking of my “favorite Switch titles,” I put the collections up at No.3 because they were my “feel-good” games to play repeatedly. I love the storylines, the characters, the mystery elements you have to solve, and more. That’s why I, alongside many others, have been campaigning to get the 7th mainline title made so we can resolve the final cliffhangers that are still out there. Whether Capcom does this or not is still up for debate, just like it was “up for debate” initially if the series would go past one game!
This reveal happened due to a post from a Bandai Namco producer, who noted that it’s harder than ever in today’s gaming world to make new IPs due to rising costs and needing to have “success right now” versus success over time, using Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise as an example of that. That’s when Ace Attorney developer Masakazu Sugimori made his own post and stated that series director Shu Takumi initially faced resistance from Capcom after the first game was released and did mediocre in sales:
“However, Takumi-san didn’t give up. He kept developing the series through to the third game, and that’s when it started to take off. From there, it got a movie, a stage play, an anime… its popularity kept growing. Ace Attorney is truly an IP that Capcom nurtured.”
And franchise fans are grateful for that! Just like they’re grateful that Capcom put every title (save for the Professor Layton crossover) on modern platforms (including the Nintendo Switch) for gamers to enjoy all at once. Now we just need that new game, Capcom…
