Who doesn’t love getting presents every month? No, seriously, tell me, so I can study them. I decided to give Loot Crate a try because all of my favorite podcasts have codes for it, so why not? I started in April but didn’t have time to give it a good and thorough review. This month the theme was “Guardians” which was chosen in honor of the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The fandoms included were Guardians of the Galaxy, The Boonies, Star Wars and Destiny.
My main worry was that I don’t really like The Boonies and I’ve never played Destiny. Last month’s crate only had fandoms I was into, so I was really into it everything I got. This month wasn’t disappointing – it actually exceeded my expectations – but there are some things I think are worth mentioning.
The Figure
Every Loot Crate comes with a figure, and this time it’s one of Rocket Raccoon with a tiny Groot, which is very cute. It looks a little closer to the comics than the film version, but it’s still really adorable. To me, the figure is quintessential Rocket – guns blazing, Groot by his side, in the ecstasy of battle and I love it.
The T-Shirt
This month’s shirt was from The Goonies but it was actually more subdued than I thought. Typically when nerd tees don’t have bit enough lady’s sizes (which I told myself I wasn’t going to go on a rant on today), I get the guy’s size and just wear them around the house or to sleep. This is kind of perfect for that function since it’s soft, has a simple and elegant design that can worn anywhere. Still, loses a point for looking like something you could get at any pirate themed tourist trap. That and only having 7 inches of width difference between the smallest and largest women’s size.
The Pin
This month’s pin for Guardians is Aang, from Avatar: The Last Airbender, in the Avatar state. Last month’s was a more generic tape-recorder, which best fit the theme. If you’re not familiar with the show, then the pin doesn’t seem to fit. It is also weird to include a pin from a fandom that wasn’t part of the main four. I also think it’s just an aesthetically ugly pin — not that I don’t love the show, but it just seems so random and out of place. Also I can’t imagine really wanting to pin it to anything, since it is so specific and not very aesthetically pleasing.
Extra 1
I am of the opinion that adult coloring books are silly, but they are harmless fun and even I love a good doodle to pass the time. The designs within the cover are a lot of fun, and I find them pretty charming and intricate. Definitely a fun little doodling activity I also appreciate that the box included some colored pencils with a sharper, since there are definitely people who won’t have any. The only thing is that the colors are pretty generic, and it would have been nice to get some gold and silver for the droids.
Extra 2
The Destiny badges were definitely the thing that was the least appealing to me, but I can definitely understand the appeal. The one thing that is difficult is that you have to be able to sew or pin the patches on, which could be tricky for people and could ruin the pins. Still, it is a creative idea and they seem to be of pretty good quality!
A Good Box With Solid Variety
While I wasn’t a fan of all the franchises included in the box, there was a lot of creativity put into the offerings, and generally speaking, it was a pretty great box. The best was definitely the figure and coloring book, and the worst was the pin. Still, a lot of fun and worth the wait!
