With the success of the Nintendo Switch, the question continues to arise of how much Nintendo will support its dedicated handheld lineup, meaning the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS. One part of that question seemed to be answered when they unveiled the 2DS XL last night. But questions still remain.
Sure, they’re going to have Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, and Hey! Pikmin coming out later, but long term, what’s the plan? Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime talked with IGN and noted that Nintendo has been announcements planned for the Nintendo 3DS:
“We will certainly be announcing new titles for the 3DS platform, and we’ll do that continuously. Some things that will be announced at E3. There will be some that we announce after E3. For us, E3 is an important event but it’s not the one defining moment,” he said. “Obviously with Nintendo Direct, we’ve created means to speak directly to our consumer base. We want to provide news and information when we believe it’s most relevant.”
This is interesting, as Nintendo is set to do another Digital Event more than likely, foregoing another live presence at E3. And Fils-Aime has stated previous that 3DS will have support throughout the year, this seems to confirm it, as well as put a lot of anticipation and pressure on what’s coming to E3.
