In the previous episode of Dragon Ball Super, Goku was unsuccessful in his attempt to recruit Android 17 for the Tournament of Power. This was due to Android 17 not wanting to leave this post and felt that the Tournament of Power was a waste. As the episode closed out, an alien force was on their way to kidnap the very same animals that Android 17 swore to protect.
As we start the episode 87, those very same aliens have made it to the island and have used a beam to transport the animals onto their spaceship. Goku and Android 17 give chase and Goku uses his instant transmission to get them both aboard the spaceship. Here they find the animals that were taken along with some other animals. Android 17 assumes that the other animals were also kidnapped from other planets, like the ones he had been protecting have been.
Back on earth, Krillin notices that Goku’s energy was moving away from the planet. It is then that Android 18 gets worried that Goku and Android 17. She states that they’re very similar that they may be getting into some sort of trouble. Oh No. 18, if you only knew. Meanwhile, Goku and Android 17 are facing off against the lower class of aliens that poached the animals, which they make short work of. Tired of waiting, Android 17 tells Goku to keep fighting the cannon fodder, while he goes after the boss of the ship. Goku doesn’t take kindly to that and wants to do Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who gets to fight the boss instead. It’s actually quite funny to see them bickering like children.
During their exchange, more aliens appear and charge at the two, withAndroid 17 managing to evade them. Leaving Goku to fight alone, Android 17 goes off to find the boss. Android 17 eventually locates the boss and walks in on the boss as he’s laughing about all money he’s going to get and asks what is so funny. A few words are exchanged and another fight ensues. This time it is with several guards that were summoned in as reinforcements, which are dispatched with ease. The boss himself jumps into the fight, who is quickly knocked on his rear end.
Goku finally manages to catch up to Android 17 at this time. Even more annoyed now than before thanks to the arrival of Goku, the boss attempts to bribe the pair. This time it’s Android 17’s turn to be annoyed as he approaches the boss and kicks him across the floor, into once of the spaceship’s windows. Cornered like a rat, the Boss unveils his trump card; a self-destruct switch that will set off some explosives that are strapped to him. He informs Goku and Android 17 that if they let him go, he won’t press the button. Otherwise, everyone is getting blown to smithereens.
Meanwhile, on earth where Beerus is napping, he wakes up suddenly from his slumber. He envisioned the very same moment that Goku and Android 17 are in. Except he envisioned everyone getting blown up, even though it hasn’t happened. He exclaims to Whiz that he dreamt that Goku had died and starts going hysterical. Whiz assures him that it was likely a bad dream and that he’s likely worn out Apparently, the Tournament of Power has him on edge. Especially since he doesn’t want to be erased. He also happens to wake up and scare Bulla, which frustrates Vegeta.
It’s bad enough Beerus just work up his newborn child, but he’s also being a cheapskate and napping at his home.
Back on the spaceship with no choice left, Android 17 tells Goku that he’s leaving the rest up to him. He tells Goku to give his family and Android 18 his regards as he’s planning on taking out the boss and sacrificing himself in the process. At that moment, he charges the boss, knocking both of them into space. Seeing how neither of them can breathe, they’ll be dead soon. Goku then goes Super Saiyan God form, performs an instant transmission to reach them and then again, this time taking them to King Kai’s planet.
When Goku and crew arrive, this his surprises King Kai who was in the middle of enjoying some sort of feast. Upon seeing the newly found visitors, he visually loses his lunch, forcing both Bubbles and Gregory to duck for cover. I suppose that could be some new form of attack that he’s yet to teach anyone.
He immediately asks Goku what is going on, to which Goku replies that this guy was trying to self-destruct and he brought him here like he did Cell. Fans of Dragon Ball Z should remember that Goku brought Cell to King Kai’s planet, to which Cell blew up. Goku figures he can do the same thing again, much to King Kai’s displeasure as he states he isn’t a bomb disposal unit. Goku continues to tell King Kai that he isn’t dangerous as he can’t stand up in the gravity on King Kai’s planet. That and since King Kai is dead it shouldn’t matter. How rude of you Goku!
King Kai continues to tell Goku that dead or not, this guy is scary and it doesn’t matter if he’s dead or not. This is a bit odd, as King Kai at one point trained Goku. He should be able to hand some lowly bad guy.
Dende interrupts the conversation, stating that the boss is lying and he doesn’t have any explosives on him. When Goku and Android 17 confront him about the lie, he tells that he wasn’t. He does that with a bit of hesitation on his part and Android 17 catches on and asks him to press the button. When the boss states that he can’t, Android 17 then demands it, to which the button definitely got pressed. Seconds later, a few fireworks go off, seemingly from some birthday party supplies he had on him. Nope, no explosives here and more important, King Kai’s planet is spared for another day.
Android 17 and Goku then sigh with relief and then return to the space ship, to get the poached animals back to earth. Goku also calls in Jaco to hand over the poachers and the animals from all the planets they’ve taken over time. Android 17 ahs never seen Jaco before and asks who he is. Goku explains this to Android 17, with Jaco later thanking the two for putting an end to this operation. Apparently, the poachers have been eluding the Space Elite Force for years, so now that they’ve been captured, Jaco might get a promotion. This makes Goku upset and asked if Jaco was going to take all the credit for what he and Android 17 had accomplished. When Jaco says yes, Goku explains that he should fight with them sometime, implying that Jaco is lazy. Jaco explains that he’s super busy and has no time to fight with him or anyone else. He continues to state that he may send a take you note to Goku or maybe he won’t. He follows up that he more than likely he won’t. Jaco is clearly a jerk, always has been and continues to be as such.
Once everything is over, Android 17 tells Goku that he owes him and that he’ll join his team. It’s not like we didn’t see this coming. He apparently also has his own reasons for entering. He wants to use the Super Dragon Balls to buy a boat. A super expensive cruiser that he’ll use to take his family around the world in. This is surprising, as I was sure he’d ask for the minotaurs to not be extinct anymore.
He then asks Goku what he’ll wish for, then says it’s stupid to ask the world’s savior what he’ll wish for. Goku answers to him that he’s never seen himself as a savior. He’s only gotten to where he is now because he likes fighting strong opponents. And while this time is no different, he doesn’t want to see innocent people and animals erased for no reason. This is ironic since the Tournament of Power is all Goku’s fault in the first place. I wonder if he keeps forgetting that. Android 17 remarks that Goku is an interesting person because of what Goku said.
Android 17 also feels that it’s weird that even though he was modified to kill Goku previously, he’ll now be fighting alongside him. Goku corrects him that it isn’t and tells him that many of his friends were once his enemies; Piccolo, Tien, Vegeta and even Buu. Those also happen to be same characters who’ll be joining Goku and Android 17 in the Tournament of Power. Android 17 then asks if his brother would also be joining them. At first, I thought he was referring to Android 16. Instead, he was talking about Krillin, who is his brother-in-law, since he’s married to Android 18, who is his twin sister. It’s kind of funny that he originally refers to Krillin as a mini monk, then corrects himself.
This wraps up Android 17’s recruit for Goku’s team. We’re getting closer to the start of the tournament and there’s still three more characters we haven’t seen yet; Tien, Master Rossi, and Piccolo. However, at the conclusion of this episode, we got a peek of what’s in store for next week. Goku is heard asking Piccolo if he’ll enter the tournament, to which we already know that he’s going to say yes. Piccolo then surprises Goku, telling him that he’s training or will train Gohan. Ever since Dragon Ball Super started, Gohan simply wasn’t the same Gohan that we remembered from Dragon Ball Z. He’s a scholar, a husband, and a father. He doesn’t or at least didn’t have time for keeping up with his martial arts. So Gohan approached Piccolo to retrain him.
I’m not sure how Goku missed this, especially since by the time Gohan and entered the scrimmage with Goku and Buu a few episodes back, Gohan was clearly at a better fighting level. Had he gone in without Piccolo training him, things would have been different. Either way, Goku thanks Piccolo for training Gohan and claims that he’s the only one he can trust to take care of Gohan. Of course, we already knew this, since Piccolo has been taking care and training Goku for the majority of his life. You know, when Goku was dead or off training and leaving his family behind.
Next week we’ll get to see both Gohan and Piccolo spar and hopefully, we’ll get to see stronger versions of both characters. Especially Piccolo. I love Piccolo as a character, but let’s face it, he’s clearly outclassed in power. Goku, Vegeta, Android 17 and even Buu are all stronger than him. The last time Piccolo held any power was during the Cell saga and once Cell absorbed Android 17, that ended. All of the Saiyans got stronger, while Piccolo got left behind. I imagine that Gohan will quickly surpass him as well in this arc. When it comes to non-human Z-fighters, he’s at the end of the list. I really hope that he’ll see some sort of power increases before the Tournament of Power starts.
That’s it for now, I’ll see you next week for Dragon Ball Super Episode 88’s review.
Summary
As far as episodes go, this was solid but not as good as last week’s episode. The animation is still looking good, so he’s to hoping that the days of the cheap animation for the series is over. Really interested and excited for next week’s episode, that’s for sure. That and I’m slowly warming up to the ending outro song.
