It was rumored not too long ago that Halo Wars: Definitive Edition was coming to Steam. This was actually started by a widely known Halo Modder known as Gamecheat13, who was able to back up his claims via a screenshot. Seemingly, fans of the series attempted to debunk this, while Microsoft had no comment on the matter.

However, it looks like those claims were indeed legit, as Microsoft has officially announced Halo Wars: Definitive Edition for Steam. The Halo Wars: Definitive Edition releases on April 20th, 2017 and is priced at $20. Included is an enhanced version of Halo Wars, improved graphics, new achievements and all of the DLC for Halo Wars. The title was originally released with the Halo Wars 2 Ultimate Edition and was not available separately.
“Halo Wars: Definitive Edition” will be available for standalone purchase from the Xbox Store, Windows Store and Steam on Thursday, April 20. “Halo Wars: Definitive Edition” is an enhanced version of the original “Halo Wars” game that runs natively on Xbox One and Windows, featuring improved graphics, additional Achievements and includes all of the DLC created for the real-time strategy game.
What it lacks, however, is Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Live. Meaning this game will be completely closed off from playing against Windows 10 owners. In its place will be a server browser where gamers can find matches to play and host. The title will also be available to purchase on Windows 10 or Xbox One and will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will have full Xbox Live support.
What gets me, is the fact that this release sends a mixed mess. Another title that was originally exclusive to Microsoft’s ecosystem/UWP environment as made its way to Steam. While this makes those who aren’t fans of the Windows 10 store happy, it also cheapens the value so to speak. Why would a gamer purchase a game on the Windows 10 store, when they can wait it out and get it on Steam. This already happened with Quantum Break and now Halo Wars.
And while Phil Spencer has stated that flagship Microsoft titles won’t make it to Steam (here), will poor sales and performance force Microsoft to change their minds? Mind you, I think the idea of these games making it to Steam, but I don’t like the loss of Xbox Live support. I really wish MS and Valve could hash that out as I think it has potential. Who wouldn’t love to play Sunset Overdrive on Steam? I think it’s a good idea, especially for those don’t want to upgrade to Windows 10.
In the end, if there’s one thing we can say, it’s that Gamecheat13 was right after all. But I’m sure he already knows this.
