On Adult Swim’s Facebook page, it was announced that Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul will start airing on Toonami on March 25. The show will be replacing One Piece and will take over its time slot.
The announcement was made on Toonami’s Pre-Flight stream which can be viewed by heading to their website here.
The television anime aired in Japan with two seasons. The first season aired from July-September 2014 and lasted 12 episodes. A sequel, Tokyo Ghoul √A aired from January-March 2015 and aslo contained 12 episodes. The second season was met with criticism as it heavily deviated from the manga. Two spinoff OVA were produced: Tokyo Ghoul Jack and Tokyo Ghoul Pinto. The manga is currently licensed by VIZ Media for North American distribution. A sequel manga, Tokyo Ghoul:re is currently publishing in Japan and no North American distributor has the license for that series just yet.
MyAnimeList.net describes the story as follows:
Tokyo has become a cruel and merciless city—a place where vicious creatures called “ghouls” exist alongside humans. The citizens of this once great metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society.
Based on the best-selling supernatural horror manga by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize is not exactly who she seems, and this unfortunate meeting pushes Kaneki into the dark depths of the ghouls’ inhuman world. In a twist of fate, Kaneki is saved by the enigmatic waitress Touka Kirishima, and thus begins his new, secret life as a half-ghoul/half-human who must find a way to integrate into both societies.
