Last year, a live-action movie adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa’s popular series Fullmetal Alchemist was announced. Since then, we’ve only been treated to short teaser clips and behind-the-scenes shots from the movie’s set; however, the first official trailer for the live-action movie has finally been released!
Production for the film mainly took place in Italy. Shooting was spotted in Volterra on the first week of June 2016. Some of the movie was also filmed locally in Japan and ultimately wrapped up on August 26, 2016. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling the release of the film, which is slated to hit Japanese theaters in Winter of this year. OXYBOT is handling the special effects for the film.
This is the latest in a long line of adaptations for Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist series. The series has already garnered two anime series: Fullmetal Alchemist, which deviated from the manga and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which rebooted the series and followed the manga more faithfully. Several animated movies were also produced for the series as well.
While the movie’s story is still yet not fully known, MyAnimeList.net describes the story of the Fullmetal Alchemist anime as follows:
Edward Elric, a young, brilliant alchemist, has lost much in his twelve-year life: when he and his brother Alphonse try to resurrect their dead mother through the forbidden act of human transmutation, Edward loses his brother as well as two of his limbs. With his supreme alchemy skills, Edward binds Alphonse’s soul to a large suit of armor.
A year later, Edward, now promoted to the fullmetal alchemist of the state, embarks on a journey with his younger brother to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone. The fabled mythical object is rumored to be capable of amplifying an alchemist’s abilities by leaps and bounds, thus allowing them to override the fundamental law of alchemy: to gain something, an alchemist must sacrifice something of equal value. Edward hopes to draw into the military’s resources to find the fabled stone and restore his and Alphonse’s bodies to normal. However, the Elric brothers soon discover that there is more to the legendary stone than meets the eye, as they are led to the epicenter of a far darker battle than they could have ever imagined.
