Fan Film on Rufio from “Hook” Fully Funded on Kickstarter

By Sara Roncero-MenendezFebruary 18, 2017

Most people remember Hook as the Steven Spielberg film where Robin Williams plays an old Peter Pan who is forced back to Neverland. One character out-shone the rest in that film — not Dustin Hoffman’s Hook, not Julia Robert’s Tinkerbell, but a then-unknown Dante Basco’s epic performance as the leader of the Lost Boys, Rufio. Fans have latched onto this character, with fan art, fan theories, and he remains a popular cosplay choice to this day.

Bangarang is a fan-made prequel about the infamous Lost Boy, explaining his much sought-after origin story that is seeking funds on Kickstarter. Plot details are scarce but it is basically about a young Filipino boy who grows up in the bad part of town who has to take down a bully with the help of two friends. Eventually, he gains his iconic mohawk and makes his way to Neverland to lead the Lost Boys in the fight against Captain Hook.

Jonah Feingold is the writer/director of the project, while Basco is the executive producer. No one has been cast yet, and there will be an open casting call in Los Angeles to find the main characters.

The campaign has already surpassed its $30,000 goal. There are still 23 days to go in the campaign at the time of writing, so if you’re looking to get your copy, you still have time. There are also perks, like autographs, special voice mails, set visits, and your own copy of the behind-the-scenes extras, though oddly enough there’s no option to get your own copy of the film. The ultimate stretch goal if they reach 200,000 is to make the story into a feature film, but they are less than 25% away from that particular milestone.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
