Were you one of many people who rushed out to purchased a Sony Bravia, Samsung Smart TV? Do you have a PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita or even a PlayStation TV and enjoy the PlayStation Now service? Well, enjoy it while you can, as Sony has officially announced that changes are coming to the service
As of August 15, 2017, Sony will be discontinuing the services of PlayStation Now on anything other than the PS4 and PC. The following platforms will lose access to PS Now as of August 15th, 2017.
- PlayStation 3
- PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV
- All 2013, 2014, 2015 Sony Bravia TV models
- All Sony Blu-ray player models
- All Samsung TV models
Sony 2016 model Bravia TVs will lose access as of April 1st, 2017. Sort of a cruel joke, isn’t it?
After thoughtful consideration, we decided to shift our focus and resources to PS4 and Windows PC to further develop and improve the user experience on these two devices. This move puts us in the best position to grow the service even further. If you use any of the above devices, we want to give our heartfelt thanks for your support, and we hope you’ll continue with us. Remember that all of your PS Now cloud game saves can easily be accessed on both PS4 and Windows PC.
If you do not wish to continue your subscription, please remember to disable auto-renewal in your account settings so that your subscription ends by April 1, 2017 on 2016 Sony Bravia TVs, and August 15, 2017 on all other devices. For 3 months subscribers, depending on when you joined the service, your subscription may auto-renew a month or two before the service discontinuation date if you do not turn it off.
I’m sure this comes to a shock to you as much as it was to me. Especially since I happen to use PS Now on both my PC and my Samsung TV’s, only now to see that I’m losing this ability. I can only imagine that this decision was center around the sales or lack of sales from the service. That said, why drop it from a select amount of devices. For that matter, why drop it from the PlayStation 3 in the first place? What happened to backward compatibility?
For many, the only reason they purchased the failed PlayStation TV was to use PS Now. Not to mention this is just one more nail in the PS Vita’s coffin.
Despite the amount of grief people give the service, I think it’s decent for what it provides. I’m not sure if I’ll continue to use it on the PC or PS4. But one this is for sure, I’m really saddened that this is happening.
