We knew it was coming, we just didn’t know when the cutoff date was. Well, it’s today, the Wii U is no more.
By “no more”, I mean Nintendo will not manufacture them anymore. Which is hardly a surprise given its failed sales, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch launch. Usually, the company would wait until the new console was out and selling before ending production of the previous model. However, Nintendo has stated before that the Wii U won’t be getting support from them anymore games wise. In fact, Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will be the last first-party game they’ll make for it.
To be clear, the online game modes will still be active, and Nintendo will still support them. But aside from that? Not much else is coming.
So, what will the legacy of the Wii U be? Well, it’ll be known for a console that was misrepresented, badly marketed, and was confusing to the consumer base because of its name. Yet, because of Wii U, we got games like Splatoon, Xenoblade Chronicles X, a MASSIVE Super Smash Bros game, Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, and a lot more.
Rest in peace Wii U, you may not have been loved by all, but there were some who really loved you.
