The official website for the Sailor Moon franchise’s 25th anniversary made the announcement that the Sailor Moon Crystal anime is set to receive a sequel television series. Even though a sequel was announced, there are no additional details, but the site did state that more details would come in the future.
The website also announced that the original Sailor Moon anime will be re-released on Blu-Ray for the first time ever. Sadly, the Blu-Ray will (initially) only be available in Japan. The first two volumes, each containing 23 episodes, will go on sale in Japan on June 14 and August 9 respectively. The Blu-Ray will feature a high definition “upconversion” of the original anime. First run prints will come with a special collector’s sleeve.
VIZ Media currently holds the license for North American distribution of the Sailor Moon Crystal anime. The first two seasons were already released and a DVD/Blu Ray combo pack was also released back on August 16. Cruncyroll, NicoNico and Hulu streamed the series as it aired in Japan.
The story is a retelling of the original anime and is described as follows:
Usagi Tsukino, a 14-year-old middle school student, meets Luna, a talking black cat that tells her that she is Sailor Moon, a guardian destined to fight a group of villains called Dark Kingdom. Luna also instructs Sailor Moon to find her fellow Sailor Guardians, the princess of an ancestral kingdom on the Moon, and a legendary artifact known as the Silver Crystal. On her journey, Sailor Moon meets Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Venus, and a mysterious masked man called Tuxedo Mask, to whom Usagi is attracted. Later, Usagi and the Sailor Guardians discover that in their previous lives they were members of an ancient Moon Kingdom in a period of time called the Silver Millennium.
