The one true, undeniable, thing that’s great about being a Nintendo fanboy or fangirl, is that they have the biggest library of first-party IP’s in the business. A library that spans just about every video game franchise out there. Yet, at times, it seems Nintendo doesn’t pay attention to all their IP’s, especially after “failures” of them. For most fans, this revolves around Metroid and the Mother/Earthbound series.
For Metroid fans, we’ve had two big failures of games in a row with Metroid: Other M and then Metroid Prime: Federation Force. The later of which was a game that didn’t even have hype, it was just…well…made. For the Mother series, it’s a little more complicated. It was big in Japan, but only had the second game come to the US in the form of Earthbound. Mother 3 has been asked by fans for some time, especially with the main character, Lucas, being in Smash Bros.
Yet, despite all our pleas, it seems Nintendo is not listening to us….or are they? During the recent Nintendo Treehouse event, Gamespot got an interview with Reggie Fils-Aime, and asked him about Metroid and Mother. To which, he said this:
“I am proud as an executive with Nintendo to say that we look at all of the boards and all of the comments and we really have a good understanding of what our consumers want. And believe me, we take that to heart as we work to create content. So I have nothing to announce–here. But we are aware that there are some key IP that consumers just can’t wait for the next true installment in that franchise’s legacy.” So, if we are to take this as he stated it, Nintendo is aware of our desire for a new and pure Metroid, as well as getting Mother 3 over here. Will it happen? It’s really hard to say. As much as Nintendo likes to please fans, they are still a business, and thus need to do what they feel will make money. But if nothing else, this can give a little spark of hope to those fanbases.
