The 2017 reboot of the Power Rangers in movie form hasn’t even hit cinemas yet, but Boom Studios, who currently publishes the highly successful Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic book series, has announced recently via iO9 that they are working with writer Ryan Parrott and artist Lucas Werneck on a comic book sequel called Power Rangers Aftershock, which will be taking place “immediately” after the 2017 movie ends.
While the sources have nothing to reveal about what’s going on in the movie itself, just confirming that Power Rangers Aftershock is happening right after the movie ends (Something the toys have a hard time not doing… Seriously, a fully gold Goldar!?). They have revealed the covers for the book, which will release to book stores and comic book stores in Graphic Novel format. The first cover, which features a photo of the Power Rangers as they appear in the movie, is available only from book stores
The second cover, which is done by artist Greg Smallwood, is available only from Comic Book Stores
Honestly, I like the second cover more as the suits look less like the terrible things they wear in the movie and more Superhero like. But the bigger worry I have is that they are announcing a sequel to the movie before the movie actually comes out. With comic books that are based around a TV or movie property (See the Buffy and Angel comic series from Dark Horse), they are usually put out after the main property has either died off or bombed in it’s original medium. With all the negative feedback on things like the suits, the trailer, Alpha 5 concept art and the Goldar reveal; is this Lionsgate admitting failure before they release the film? I guess we’ll find out in 2017.
