For those fans of Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover, good news is in order. The Star Wars Twitter account has officially announced that Glover will play Lando Calrissian in the 2018 Han Solo film. Starring alongside Alden Ehrenreich, playing Solo, the film will explore the early careers of these two men, making their way to the top of the Star Wars underworld. What strange and dangerous adventures will they get into? We’ll have to wait until May of 2018 to find out.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film’s directors, released a statement just after the announcement that was part excited, part joking, and totally sincere:
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Fans know Glover best from his role on the hit comedy series Community, but he’s also had roles in Magic Mike XXL, The Martian, 30 Rock, China, IL, and Adventure Time.
Glover was also cast for the upcoming Spiderman: Homecoming in a currently unnamed role. Many believe that he will be Miles Morales, a character who takes over the mantle of Spiderman after Peter Parker dies in the comics. It would make sense, since Glover was the voice of Morales in two episodes of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series. FX also just renewed his show, Atlanta, for a second season, and he is rumored to be working on a new album. The last piece of news is especially promising to fans as there were hints and rumors that Glover would be retiring his rapping persona, leaving many devastated.
All we can say is 2018 is going to be a red letter year for Donald Glover.
