Playtonic has released a new trailer for Gamescom showcasing their upcoming love letter to the 3D platformers of yesteryear, Yooka-Laylee. The roughly two minutes of footage comprises colorful gameplay, chock-full of the sort of running, jumping, gliding, rolling, tail-whipping, and of course, snow-plowing that one would expect from developers who formerly worked on such titles as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. Not shown are how many collectibles players will be obsessing over, but hopefully the developers will remain true to their word to be merciful.
Also on exhibit are some of the various environment types, such as an urban setting with towers formed from giant books, lushly overgrown ruins along cliffsides, frozen caverns consisting of twisting tunnels and spires of ice, and the requisite swimming level that I’m sure won’t be frustrating to navigate whatsoever. Aside from some disembodied eyes that creepily chase after the game’s heroes, it all seems very in line with what made these N64 era games special, and looks to be a great hearkening back to a time when 3D platformers reigned supreme.
Check out the action and bask in the classic goodness for yourself in the video below. Yooka-Laylee release in the first quarter of 2017 on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U.
