It was announced a couple of months ago that Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist would be receiving a live action movie adaptation. Since the original post, more details have come out about the film.
We know that the film was slated for release in Japanese theaters in the Summer of 2017; however, that has now been pushed back to the Winter of 2017. We also know that they have cast Yamada Ryosuke in the role of Edward Elric. Ryosuke has some acting experience as he has previously starred in the live-action adaptation of Assassination Classroom, playing Nagisa Shiota. Outside of that, we had no additional information on the movie until now.
According to the director, Fumihiko Sori, the Fullmetal Alchemist‘s story will be told in one singular movie as opposed to the two-part system used for most other live action adaptations. The director also noted that Edward Elric will be 20 years old in the film rather than 15 years old like he was in the manga. Sori went on to explain his deep affection for the Arakawa’s story and has said the following about it:
“It is my dearest wish to turn this wonderful story into a film, and it is not an exaggeration to say that I am living for this reason. I want to create a wonderful film that will use techniques that challenge Hollywood”
Sori also mentioned that the film will be using a different kind of CG technique that will utilize it in areas where the audience may not normally see it. He encourages us to watch the film to see these new techniques for ourselves. In addition to these details, the cast has been revealed.
