During a financial earnings announcement, Nintendo made the announcement that their next video game console, codenamed NX, will launch WORLDWIDE in March of 2017. In a bit of disappointing news; however, Nintendo stated that they will neither be showcasing nor unveiling the console at this year’s E3 event, scheduled to take place June 14-16 later this year.
The official announcement is as follows:
“For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed “NX” with a brand-new concept. “NX” will by launched in March 2017 globally.”
Skipping out on E3 may make gamers shake their heads, but one must remember that Nintendo frequently holds their Nintendo Direct showcases throughout the entire year. Nintendo could and probably will dedicate an entire Direct to the NX console. The company has done this in the past with several other major announcements and it is expected to be the case this time around as well. When the Direct showcasing the NX will happen remains to be seen, but if they do not go that route, there are still other major gaming events set to take place throughout the year where Nintendo could choose to unveil the console.
Nintendo did previously mention that there will be more first-party launch titles for the NX when it did launch as they look to rectify the issues they had when they launched the Wii U. Many fans were disappointed by the relatively weak lineup with the Wii U’s launch and the company recognized this issue and vowed to not repeat that again with the launch of the NX. The Wii U version of the upcoming Legend of Zelda game is rumored to be one of the launch titles for the new console.
