Recent rumors surrounding a trademark filed by Sega have materialized in the form of a big unveiling in Famitsu (via Gematsu). A new entry in the Valkyria Chronicles series of tactical RPGs is in development for the Playstation 4. It will be called Valkyria: Azure Revolution, and it will apparently break from the traditions of the series in some notable ways.
The game, according to producer Youichi Simosato, will no longer be using a turn-based strategy battle system, but will utilize real-time RPG mechanics. In terms of the story and game world, he said, “It’s completely different (from Valkyria Chronicles). This time, the key item known as Ragnite is not just used as an energy resource, but also has magical aspects. Valkyria are supernatural compared to humans, beings considered close to gods.” The game will feature the homeland of the protagonists, called Jutland, fighting back against the expanding Rus empire that has blockaded and oppressed them.
What’s more, a remaster of the original Valkyria Chronicles is headed to Playstation 4 as well. It will release in Japan on February 10, 2016, and will include a demo for the upcoming title. As for a western release, there has been no word yet. The last game in the franchise, Valkyria Chronicles III, saw no localization.
