File this under “Fears Confirmed” folks, as Konami is doing exactly what it’s fans, or former fans feared. Yes, they’re taking their once infamous IP’s and are now making mobile games out of them. The first of many it seems is a fan favorite, Contra. You know, the game that many of us have been asking for a new rendition of for , I don’t know, a long time. And yes, I’m including Hard Corps: Uprising as well, but back to the news.
So this new unnamed Contra title is being developed for the Chinese market in tandem with Tencent, for Apple iOS and Google Android devices. The title will apparently still retain its side scrolling run and gun elements, and will also include micro-transactions, however how the micro-transactions will work has not been outlined just yet. That said, if you’ve ever played Konami’s previous mobile entry, Contra Evolution, I expect them to work like that title.
This was announced via Konami’s recent press release as of today. (link)
“New Contra Title to Be Released as a Mobile Game in the Chinese Market
Konami Digital Entertainment will release the latest title in the popular Contra series of action shooting games, enjoyed across numerous platforms since the first game hit arcades in 1987, for the China market, in cooperation with Chinese internet service provider Tencent.
This new title is a side-scrolling shooting game developed specifically for Chinese customers as a mobile game for smartphones, and will retain the style and themes that Contra fans know and love.
Konami will continue to distribute new titles from its various IPs across a range of devices, platforms, and game formats, to provide customers worldwide with new and exciting entertainment.”
And while I”m mildly disappointed with the news, hopefully the title is somewhat playable and worth the Contra name. Maybe this is the one way we’ll finally get that Axelay sequel, right Konami?
