I am a huge fan of DJ Premier, from his Gang Starr days (RIP Guru,) even up to now, as his sound is the most iconic in Hip-Hop history. So imagine my shock when I read that Mean Joe Preem is going to offer some of his hits to NBA 2K16.
Now we don’t know which songs he will add, but I’m excited to possibly hear some Jeru the Damaja, Afu-Ra, the LOX, Screwball or Guru as I’m playing through the game.
But DJ Premier isn’t the only beatmaker curating the soundtrack, as DJ Khaled and DJ Mustard will be adding songs to the song selection, increasing the playlist count to three, one for Preem, one for Khaled and one for Mustard.
But wait…THERE’S MORE!
There will also be an “Around the World” playlist, and a 2K Classics playlist (Dan the Automator, anyone?) to increase the total playlist count to 5 (6 if you count the master playlist.)
2K Sports offered a press release discussing the upcoming playlists for the Spike Lee-directed game:
NBA 2K16’s soundtrack will be comprised of six in-game playlists, including three lists individually curated by each producer, an international “Around the World” playlist, the 2K Classics Mixtape featuring fan favorites from previous 2K titles, and a master playlist that includes all 50 tracks from this year’s selection. The expansive music library spans a wide range of genres, including hip-hop, electronic, pop, rock and alternative, from throwback tracks from the ‘70s through today’s Top 40, including The Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop,” Nas’ “Represent,” and Zedd’s “I Want You to Know” featuring Selena Gomez.
DJ Premier also offered a word to the blog Premier Wuz Here:
I am excited to be a part of the ongoing series of NBA 2K. As a sports fan, it was already fun before the work began. NBA 2K16 will be another big hit, especially alongside DJ Mustard and DJ Khaled bringing our different musical styles to the game.
NBA 2K16 releases on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PC and iOS platforms on September 29th. Pre-order the game to receive the “Early Tip-Off” Edition on September 25th.
