On June 4, 2015, The World Video Game Hall of Fame at the Strong National Museum of Play announced its first six members, reported USA Today. Among them is the classic shooter Doom. In response, the Bethesda Blog (id Software, the creator of the franchise, is now owned by ZeniMax Media) had this to say: ” It’s an amazing honor to see DOOM inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame…This honor reminds of us of our great heritage. And, at this year’s E3 we look forward to showing the world DOOM’s future.”
For those unfamiliar with the franchise or its history, Doom was published in late 1993, about a year and a half after id Software essentially invented the first-person shooter with Wolfenstein 3D. The latter title was known for violence and graphical fidelity, but the former upped the ante on both fronts. Graphics and gameplay made it a classic that spawned numerous clones, the gore helped to spawn a vigorous public debate that continues to this day regarding violence in gaming and its effects on the player. This influence more than warrants a spot among the greatest titles in gaming.
When Bethesda speaks of the future, they are of course referencing their first E3 press conference, to be held on June 14th at 7 pm PT/10 pm ET, as well as a number of panels they will hold on the show floor. Bethesda will be holding a panel dedicated to their next Doom title at 1:00 pm on June 16th. Bethesda published Wolfenstein: The New Order last year to a warm critical reception (a Metacritic score of 81 on PC, 79 on PS4 and XBox One), and just recently released The Old Blood DLC. Can they achieve similar success with Doom?
