Over the weekend, we got some news from NBC, The CW, and from an interview with Arrow’s Stephen Amell, all concerning DC’s various TV shows.
Over at NBC, they have officially announced the cancellation of Constantine. Not all hope is lost for the show however. Many prominent TV and DC figures are calling for the continuation of the show and there are already a number of rumors going around that the show will be picked up by another network or continue on as a web-series. One of those rumors that is picking up steam, is that Fox is looking to pick up the show and hold Frankenstein (Fox has recently picked up The Frankenstein Code), Lucifer, and Constantine under one roof. With those three, can we get a television version of Justice League Dark later on down the road? There is hope.
Over at The CW, we have confirmation of the rumored, not-so-secretive, Flash/Arrow Spin-off Show. The show will be called Legends of Tomorrow and star characters from Arrow, The Flash, and some “never-before-seen DC legends.” Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), The Atom (Brandon Routh), Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee), Jay Jackson (Franz Drameh), and Rip Hunter (presumably Arthur Darvill) are all set to be the main characters, and this roster may grow still. The official description for Legends of Tomorrow reads:
“When heroes alone are not enough … the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat — one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?”
Speaking of crossovers, Arrow’s star, Stephen Amell, took questions at Wizard World Philadelphia and dropped an interesting nugget. Amell was asked if himself and The Flash, Grant Gustin, would appear in the Justice League movies. Amell said ” right now, the movie universe and the television universe are very, very separate,” citing Ezra Miller being cast as the movie Flash. Amell did go on to say however, “On the B side, there is an opportunity for interconnectivity with any DC television show that exists.”
“Now, Constantine was an NBC show. I’m on The CW. I had had discussions with DC… so not NBC, not CW… but with DC Entertainment about guest starring on Constantine when it was still on the air. And that was and is still on the table. So we have Flash, we have Legends of Tomorrow, a new show which is directly connected to the Arrow universe, we have Supergirl… she got picked up, directed by my good friend Glen Winter, that pilot, I can’t wait to see it, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing… there’s Gotham obviously, and I’m missing something… Titans, there you go. So again I wouldn’t worry too much about the movie universe, because we have no shortage of options for me and other characters to populate.”
Amell also said that the mentioned Constantine crossover would have surrounded John Constantine’s expertise with the Lazarus Pit, which has just appeared on Arrow.
So, it seems that DC is trying to do what fans have been wishing for, have all of the TV shows connect. If the movie universe expands without the TV universe, and the TV universe does some cross-networking and expands without the movie universe… Could we see a Crisis On Infinite Earths event with the movies and TV shows as Earth-Prime and Earth-1?
