As part of the 30th anniversary celebration for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. has joined forces with Blizzard Entertainment to bring an iconic anime-meets-gaming crossover to Overwatch 2. The event, titled “Operation Meteor”, delivers a quartet of legendary Gundam Wing Mobile Suits as premium skins (yes, you’ll have to pay for them) for the free-to-play team shooter.
Longtime Gundam Wing fans will instantly recognize Operation Meteor as the codename for the series’ central conflict—when five Gundams were sent from space to Earth to fight against tyranny. It’s a clever and fitting name for this event, tying in the thematic legacy of rebellion and heroism with Overwatch’s own narrative of resistance and hope.
Players can now suit up with Legendary skins inspired by fan-favorite Mobile Suits:
- Wing Gundam Zero (Gundam Wing Endless Waltz) for Mercy
- Gundam Epyon for Ramattra (Gundam Wing)
- Gundam Deathscythe Hell (Gundam Wing Endless Waltz) for Reaper
- Tallgeese for Soldier: 76 (Gundam Wing)
These skins are available in-game across all platforms: PC (Battle.net), Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. Blizzard’s art team worked closely with Bandai Namco to ensure each skin stayed true to its anime origins while feeling authentic in Overwatch 2.
Blizzard released a slick collaboration trailer packed with nostalgia and Gundam-fueled flair to mark the launch, which you can watch below.
As someone who’s been a massive Gundam fan since Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, seeing these legendary Mobile Suits reimagined in the high-octane world of Overwatch 2 is nothing short of surreal. For me—and countless other longtime fans—this crossover is a dream come true, blending the rich history of Gundam with a modern gaming icon.
Overwatch 2 continues to evolve with high-impact crossovers and new seasonal content. Set in an optimistic future where heroes from around the world fight for a better tomorrow, the game features 43 unique characters and maps inspired by real-world locales, offering fast-paced, team-based action across modes and platforms.
For many, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing was the gateway into the sprawling Gundam universe. First airing 30 years ago in Japan, and later winning over Western audiences, it told the story of five young pilots waging war for freedom in the politically charged After Colony timeline.
Whether you’re a veteran pilot or fresh to the world of Gundam, Overwatch 2’s Operation Meteor event is a stylish, action-packed tribute to an anime classic.
Sadly, this makes me wish that Gundam Evolution was still up and running.
