As a diehard Nintendo fanboy and the host of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, it’s very fair to say that my thoughts are “fixed upon” a certain date. That date is April 2nd, 2024, when the Nintendo Switch 2 will have its first official Direct, showcasing the many games that we will get to play in the first year or two of the console’s release. There are PLENTY of variables on what could be shown that day. The question is, “Will Nintendo play it safe with its game reveals? Or will they swing for the fences?”
Based on past Nintendo Directs, the answer would seemingly be, “Yeah, they’ll swing for the fences.” After all, President Shuntaro Furukawa has made it clear multiple times that he knows the transition between the Switch and Switch 2 is vital, and the new system needs to have big games to bring fans over to it. To that end, company veteran Takaya Imamura revealed to GamesRadar+ that he thinks The Big N has something hidden that’ll truly blow gamers’ minds:
“The Switch has had a really long lifespan, and it sold really well, which must mean that this is something that is a global success. It’s got supporters all around the world, and I was thinking it would be difficult to really change that. But having said that, I think they’ve still got something up their sleeves.”
Obviously, that could mean a lot of things. In truth, the most “obvious” things are big games for the Nintendo Switch 2 that are from not just the “standard Nintendo best-sellers” but the niche series, too. Plus, there is 3rd party support that could get really big if the company goes in that direction. That includes getting key ports from companies like Capcom, Square Enix, and even Microsoft!
Or, they could ask them for exclusive titles to really make the 3rd party lineup sing! Only time will tell what happens.
