When Capcom announced it was working on a follow-up to Onimusha, titled Onimusha: Way of the Sword, fans of the franchise went wild. Now, thanks to the latest Capcom Spotlight event, we have more details about the highly anticipated game.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch in 2026, so if you were hoping for a release this year, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. This new installment introduces several fresh characters, including a brand-new protagonist, and takes place in Kyoto during Japan’s Edo period. Just like the original game, the focus remains on intense and cinematic sword combat.
One of the most significant takeaways from the event is that the development team is making it clear: Onimusha: Way of the Sword won’t be an impossibly difficult game.
Instead, Capcom aims to deliver an action-packed experience where players can enjoy thrilling sword fights without the brutal challenge of a Soulslike. In other words, this won’t be one of those games designed to relentlessly punish players—it’s about pure action, not frustration.
And honestly, I respect that. Lately, so many games toe the line between action RPGs and Soulslike experiences, leading to endless debates about which category they fall into. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of that conversation. Sometimes, I just want to play a game without getting my ass kicked every five minutes—not that it happens often.
While we now have a release window, there’s no confirmed launch date in 2026 yet. But at the very least, we know Capcom is actively developing the game for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and soon, fans will finally get the long-awaited Onimusha sequel they’ve been hoping for.
