Sony has increasingly stepped up its presence in cloud streaming over the years. When the PlayStation Portal launched last year many lamented that it was tethered to the PlayStation 5. This meant that it was essentially a $200 remote play device with its own screen and Dualsense attached. Relying on the player’s local WIFI signal as the basis for how well the games would run on it.
However, as of Monday for many regions, and in Europe today, gamers can now play select titles that are currently available on Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription service on their PlayStation Portal without using the actual console. Since cloud streaming is a perk for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, this means the The update is also only available to those subscribed to the highest tier of the service as well.
Sony states cloud streaming of PS5 games is in beta and could be further updated at any time. As of this writing, 120 games are available to stream including Monster Hunter Rise, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and more.
The cloud streaming beta is currently available in the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.
However, unlike its console version, streaming PS4 and PS3 games is not supported on the Portal, but may come at a later date. Along with some other features that are not currently available with cloud streaming.
As we are in the beginning stages of publicly testing cloud streaming on PS Portal, some features will not be available, such as Game Trials, streaming games purchased on PS Store, system features such as Party voice chat and game invites for select games, Create button, 3D audio, and in-game commerce.
Sony states it is looking for feedback from those that try out the beta. So, hopefully they will be taking notes and adding in more games and these features soon.
