Look, no one was as surprised as me when The Super Mario Bros Movie made over a billion dollars at the box office. I thought it might do good, but a billion? No. Definitely not. Yet, it did that, and that meant Nintendo would push for something else to get the big screen treatment. So, when The Legend of Zelda movie was announced, I was tentatively excited while also being fairly cautious, especially since it would be a live-action movie! As we noted on the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast previously, there are a lot of things they have to get right to even hope to mimic Mario’s success.
That might be why in the latest financial briefing, Nintendo revealed that the “release window” for The Legend of Zelda movie is simply “202X.” No, that’s not a Mega Man reference, that’s them saying that they don’t know when it’ll exactly release, but it’ll likely be this decade.
Odd? Yes. Honest? Absolutely. Nintendo should know by now not to rush anything to theaters. They delayed Mario’s movie from December to April if you recall, and that paid off hugely. With this being a live-action movie with MASSIVE expectations, Nintendo will want to take it slow and let Shigeru Miyamoto, Wes Ball, and whoever else is involved get all the time they need to make it right.
