I’ve done my best to be fair to the final season of Superman & Lois, and to that end, there have been things that have been handled fairly, and then there have been other elements that haven’t been handled well. In “Perfectly Good Wedding,” we got a cavalcade of that, and the season seemed to want to take a detour to focus on the worst characters of the lot, which is why my Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 4 Review will not kind at times.
Let’s start with the positive. The “Return of Superman” at the beginning was well-handled simply because it let the emotion of the moment override anything else that could’ve been done there. Many would’ve filled it with all sorts of dialogue, but instead, this episode focused on the raw feelings that were going on. No words needed to be said, and that was a pretty cool thing to behold.
Just as important and predictable was that Superman isn’t 100% after his injury. His powers are still there, but not to the level of his pre-death form. That’s why they did a time skip to allow him to heal and be out of the public eye so that he could rest and Luthor wouldn’t return for him. I wish they had focused on this more, as there was a lot to mine out of it, as a key “wine confession” scene that came later proved. Instead…
…we got a wedding that no one asked for! I know you all weren’t here when I reviewed last season (as I did it for another website,) but I LOATHED the pairing of Kyle and Chrissy. They basically said, “These two people are single, so let’s put them together in the most forced way possible!”
Seriously, these two are terrible together, and they spent the majority of this episode proving that on both sides of the equation. They rushed to a wedding. Then they realized that they rushed in only AFTER Chrissy went through dire emotional trauma. Kyle tried to make it seem like he had done nothing wrong in the past and just “wanted to have a family again.” Oh, and they had the classic/cliche “My mother doesn’t like you” bit, and so on. On the plus side, they didn’t get married, which I’m grateful for. However, knowing this show, they’ll figure out a way to get them married before the end. It’s inevitable.
I really hated this, not just because it happened like it did, but because it took away from numerous stories that were far cooler or more important. Furthermore, some key characters weren’t around for the entire episode, including Lana! Where was she throughout all of this? Especially when Clark is found to be back, and yet she’s…not?
Then there was the Jordan side of things. Apparently, for the last three weeks, instead of enjoying time with his father or training with his brother…he’s sulking…again…and listening to that voice recording…even though it was obvious why Luthor gave it to him, and so on and so forth. Then, all it took was two very simple conversations to get out of his funk! Jordan has been one of the biggest pendulums in this series, and it’s really sad that after all this time…they still can’t get the character past himself. Now, yes, I do like his “I need to take a break” notion, but it could’ve been done more meaningfully.
Going back to missing characters, one of the biggest MIAs in all of this was Lex Luthor. They specifically state that it’s been three weeks since he ordered Doomsday to kill Sam Lane…and yet…he just vanished? Recall that he said multiple times he was “staying in Smallville” and even went to the Kent’s barn last episode to give Jordan that message. He was moving his plan at a breakneck pace to stick it to Lois and fully ruin her life. He was even buying parts of Smallville…so why did he just vanish? A few days of being gone? Sure, to let the heat die down from the Lane killing. But three weeks? Not this Luthor. He unintentionally let Lois be happy again, which he wouldn’t have abided by. Not to mention, there were key moments in that time skip that were touched upon that Luthor could’ve easily screwed with and yet didn’t.
Just as important, and something I touched upon last week, is that Lois is now trying to lock Luthor up by going after his cronies. That makes no sense, as they had Sam Lane visually witness Luthor saying to his cronies to bury him alive, and then they had numerous members of the D.O.D witness Luthor order Doomsday to kill Sam Lane…but the only way to get his is through his lackeys? Really?
It was downright comical at the end when Jordan couldn’t take on the fire gadget dude, and Luthor sent HIM to deal with Gretchen instead of…you know…just shooting her? Oh, and she just happened to escape a burning building without issue? Really?
Now, I don’t want to end this negatively, so I will note a few other things I appreciated about this episode. For example, seeing Bitsie and Tyler back on screen together is pure poetry. They are indeed the best live-action version of Lois & Clark, and we saw that throughout the episode.
I also enjoyed Jonathan’s training in the episode, especially his understanding of Clark’s movie references and the “dealer’s choice” moment that definitely got me laughing. Again, if the episode had focused on things like this and Clark’s overall condition, it would’ve been better.
As I wrap up my Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 4 Review, I want to note that I still think this season can pull off this arc and potentially stick the landing. However, they need to focus on what’s really important and do away with the nonsense (looking at you, Kyle & Chrissy) that won’t get the proper time to develop with just six episodes left. With Superman now known to be alive once more, things need to heat up again, and I’m curious how it’ll go.
Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 4 Review
Summary
“Perfectly Good Wedding” was anything but perfect, and once again highlighted the shortfalls of reduced season. Key people were missing with no real explanation, and the stakes were in the wrong place as we get to the halfway point of the end.
Pros
- Superman’s “health issue.”
- Lois & Clark being back together
- Lois wanting to find anything joyful to hold onto.
- The wordless opening.
Cons
- The reasoning behind the health issue was a bit lame, though.
- Key characters missing.
- Random henchman villain.
- Kyle & Chrissy.
- …no, really, Kyle & Chrissy…just…no.
- Jordan’s “crisis.”
- Time skip.
