Deadpool & Wolverine Won’t Have Multiple Characters Breaking The Fourth Wall

It's Deadpool's shtick, no one elses!
By Todd BlackJune 25, 2024
Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine tied up together in an awkward moment.

Deadpool & Wolverine is shaping up to be the highest-grossing movie of the year based on early accounts, and it’s not hard to see why. The film is highly anticipated, is bringing back Hugh Jackman as Logan, will be the characters “introduction” into the MCU, and feature numerous references to the X-Men universe of films and beyond. However, based on a certain “turn off your cellphones” ad, you might think that Logan will join Wade in breaking the 4th wall anytime he wants. Good news (or bad, depending on how you view it), that won’t happen.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Shawn Levy noted that all attempts to have a character break the 4th wall that wasn’t Wade Wilson were shut down immediately by his team and Ryan Reynolds:

“So many actors come into a Deadpool movie and they’re like, ‘Great, I get to talk to the camera and break the fourth wall.’ We’re like, ‘No, no, no. There actually is a system here.’ And that keeps Deadpool’s tone unique to him.”

Speaking of Ryan Reynolds, he was also in that interview and he noted:

“There are rules. Very specific rules. You would diminish stakes in the film if everyone—or even anyone else—was also aware of the fourth wall or any kind of meta aspect. Deadpool is the only character who has that ability to do that. If everyone did that, then you would no longer invest in that character as much. You really want to believe that the villain is a villain. You really want to believe that your costar’s character is true as well. Deadpool can undermine that—and does undermine that—because you don’t want the audience to take him as seriously.”

So, while Deadpool & Wolverine will have great banter with the two, the duo won’t be having banter with the audience. In that regard, it’s a one-man show.
