Following the success of Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Wizards of the Coast today launched pre-release events for Modern Horizons III, the latest set for the world-renowned trading card game, Magic: The Gathering (MTG). Bringing powerful new cards and reprints from Magic’s history to the Modern format, Modern Horizons III brims with collectibility and nostalgia for players to sink their teeth into. Modern Horizons III will be released for MTG Arena on June 11 and for tabletop on June 14.
The Eldrazi return
Modern Horizons III includes the retelling of the Eldrazi, a story of unfathomable horrors that follows the malevolent interdimensional Eldrazi titans and their plane-devouring pursuits. Packed with newly-imagined versions of the god-like beings, players can unleash Emrakul, Ulamog, and Kozilek in their staggering physical forms across foil-etched or even serialised borderless concept treatments exclusive to Collector Boosters.
*Serialized Modern Horizons 3 cards are localized in English only and are available in Magic: The Gathering – Modern Horizons 3 Collector Boosters of any language. Non-serialized Modern Horizons 3 cards are mechanically identical to serialized variants.
Planewalker’s spark
Modern Horizons III also sees the return of heroic and villainous planeswalkers, from Ajani Goldmane and Ral Zarek to Grist and Sorin Markov. The new set showcases five fan-favourites in brand new double-faced cards (DFC) that depict how they became Planeswalkers.
Modern’s never been more marvellous
Designed for both draft and updating the competitive Modern format, Modern Horizons III offers the chance to create strong new decks or revitalise old favourites. Front and centre is the long-awaited return of allied fetch lands, nonbasic lands that allow players to fully customise and optimise their mana base. These are available in four awe-inspiring treatments; regular frame, extended-art frame, retro frame, and borderless frame.
For those looking to reinvigorate their competitive strategies by channeling aether, energy is a returning mechanic that uses energy counters to pay the cost of activated or triggered abilities. Another important addition to Modern Horizons III and its skill-focused gameplay is the bonus sheet, which reprints a range of classic cards, bringing them to the Modern format for the very first time.
Expand the collection with power and style
Players can revel in the nostalgia of Modern Horizons III with the retro frame treatment, which pays homage to card designs from Magic’s history.
The borderless profile treatment also makes a return, alongside the frame break treatment with its striking and vibrant art bound to impress any collector.
