The Story
We start off with a battle against one of the Lieutenant Generals that serves the Master of Steel, Cheon-Il Bang. Mugeuk tries his best; however, he is no match for him. That’s when Caiman steps into the battle and takes him on. After training for hundreds of years within Jaehwon’s tower, he has amassed a power so great that he was able to taken Cheon-Il Bang down!
With him out of the way, Jaehwon decides to make an attack on Manticore and for that, he must go through the Golden Sky Sect! There, we met a Dream Demon named Sirwen. When the Golden Sect is attacked and its head on death’s doorstep, she tries to bargain with Jaehwon for him to join her and serve the Master of Darkness. He refuses so she uses the Eight Gates of Hell skill on him. Jaehwon falls unconscious in the real world as he has to overcome these trials.
Once it ends, he awakens and finds that Sirwen hasn’t really joined him but rather stays by him because she has unfinished business. Meanwhile, the Recovery Palace was attacked by Jaehwon’s forces but they suffered heavy losses. Some begin to question Jaehwon himself until he awakens and announces that he’s going to march on the Recovery Palace. He wishes to only take Caiman, Sirwen, and Cheongheo. Jaehwon marches and the volume ends with them making quite the entrance into the Palace’s chambers!
Characters
The volume does a bit more world-building by giving us some structure to the Masters and the three distinct ranks of their generals. This was done to show how powerful Cheon-Il Bang was while he was just the lowest rank of the three general ranks. This, of course, was juxtaposed by showing off how powerful Jaehwon is. He has said that he could have reached a power level equal to that of a Master!
In addition to an update on his power, while he was trapped within the Eight Gates of Hell, namely on the Seventh Gate of Self, we learned about his past, how he was a Corporal in the military, and how his entire platoon died when one of his mates was bullied so much he killed everyone; however, since he was the only one compassionate towards him, he was spared and found innocent of any wrongdoing. While one would be grateful for being spared, this was the moment that Jaehwon began to reject systems and began to walk the path he’s walking now.
Outside of this, we have a new character in Sirwen, The Dream Demon. She’s hot, she’s sexy, and she knows it; however, she’s also a bit full of herself in other ways, too. She feels that humans are beneath dream demons and that no matter what they do, they cannot do anything to defeat them… that is until she meets Jaehwon. When she realizes that she’s outclassed, you can tell that she wants to stick by Jaehwon out of curiosity but won’t admit it. In other words, she’s a tsundere. She also has an attraction to power because when she’s questioned about abandoning her servitude to the Master of Darkness, she shrugs it off as if it’s not a big deal. I don’t fully trust her, though, as she looks to be the type who can easily deceive others. We’ll see where this goes.
Caiman also received some nice development. He finally found the strength he was looking for and earned it through honest hard work, just as he wished. This further shows off his nobility and when we reach the end of the volume, he now has the power to settle an old score from 900 years ago! Seeing how strong he has become makes him worthy of taking the cover of this volume!
Final Thoughts
So, Jaehwon DOES have a weakness… spells that render you unconscious! For all of the power he wields, a simple spell from a dream demon did him in for ten days. The fact that anyone could have killed him but didn’t is a testament to how lucky he was. In addition to that, there were some pretty interesting developments here such as going to Sirwen’s workshop to get a device for long-range teleportation. We saw her making towers and one of them had a pretty unique, yet, familiar name. It’s almost if we knew the name of it for six volumes now…
We also learned about an item known as The Narrow Gate. The Masters can pass into Chaos through The Narrow Gate; however, if it’s destroyed, the only way they would be able to enter Chaos after that is if they die. Even though it seems highly unlikely that any would kill themselves just to enter Chaos, Jaehwon doesn’t want to take that chance and wants to prepare for any outcome… which means only one thing… at least one of them is hellbent and crazy enough to do it. Which one? Time will tell, I suppose, otherwise, there was no point in mentioning this plot point.
Another good volume with a mixture of action and character development. Looks like we’ll be starting off with a battle of revenge in Volume 7!
