Fighting games have, at times, been infamous for having certain characters be “far better” than others. Whether it be because of certain gameplay mechanics, unique features, or just a size advantage (looking at you, Yoda from SoulCalibur IV!), having a broken character can be tiring when you face them. That brings me to Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which has nearly 90 characters on its roster when you add the DLC characters. Given the large roster, that must mean that the game has plenty of character imbalances, right? Wrong.
That’s all thanks to Masahiro Sakurai. In the latest video of his “Creating Games” series, he revealed that Super Smash Bros Ultimate is SO BALANCED…that the difference between win rates from the “best character” to the “worst character” is less than 4%. No, really, that’s the number. Sakurai worked hard with the team to ensure that characters were balanced without feeling both overpowered or “average” in nature.
