I love the John Wick franchise. What started out as a simple “new action series” became one of the most epic and definitive series in the action movie genre. Watching Keanu Reeves do all his own fight scenes and highlight the beauty of one-shot fight scenes was truly a sight to behold. While the mainline franchise’s future is still up for debate, there are spinoffs that have come out or will come out. One is The Ballerina, and the other has just been announced, as Donnie Yen will return as Caine for a feature film about the character.
A statement about the movie was received by ComicBook.com:
“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an inedible mark and had fans asking for more,” revealed Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “The John Wick universe that Chad, Basil, Erica, and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey.”
“The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion,” Yen noted in his own statement. “Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
As I noted in my review of the fourth movie, Caine was a totally awesome character, and I wanted to see more of his backstory. The question is how Caine is alive, as the ending of the fourth film revealed that the “consequences” of his actions had caught up with him. We’ll have to wait and see how it goes.
