Since its release, the newest Vanillaware game has been doing well—so well that it is selling out in Japan.
ATLUS Japan has made a statement regarding this and has apologized to customers. They acknowledge that Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord is quickly selling out and are trying to restock and ship to retailers as soon as possible. In terms of sales of the game, according to Famitsu, it occupied three spots on the top sellers chart. with the Switch version selling at #1 with over 40,000 units. The PS5 Version is selling at #3 with over 24,000 units, and the PS4 version is selling at #8 with over 8,000 units sold. This is more than double the sales of Vanillaware’s last title, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, originally sold only on PS4 before being released on Switch later.
The sales chart ending on March 10th is shown as such:
Software sales (followed by lifetime sales):
- [NSW] Unicorn Overlord – 40,991 (New)
- [PS5] Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – 24,482 (287,138)

It seems that the timed exclusive demo for Switch and the current user base helped with the sales. It is very good to see another Vanillaware game doing so well, even though it put them in a financial deficit again. So, if you want to see more of Vanillaware and their beautiful creations, consider supporting them and this game.
Unicorn Overlord is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
