The Story
The seventh volume of The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses sees Mie and Komura go on a date that’s not a date but it was totally a date! Summer break had begun and Komura crammed and got all of his homework done within the first two days. That left him severely fatigued since he had foregone sleep to get it done. On top of that, he had sent Mie a message on LIME but never received a response. The worry and anxiety from that alone caused him to suffer from sleep deprivation. Luckily, Mie was doing the same thing with her homework which was why she didn’t respond. When she did, Komura instantly fell asleep in the middle of their conversation!
This leads to the two of them going out on their date that’s not a date but is totally a date. They ended up going to the aquarium. Mie almost forgot her glasses but went back and got them. Her dad showed up and ended up meeting Komura but thankfully Mie shooed him away as it was a bother, even for her, for him to be around. When they get there, it’s just a lot of random cuteness although someone they knew was nearby so they kind of rushed through things. After realizing that, they went back a second time but during one of the shows, Mie got splashed so she took her glasses off so that they could dry. This meant she went through the whole aquarium a second time virtually blind.
When they were heading back, they were on the train and it was terribly crowded. There was a really cute moment between the two of them because of it but that moment didn’t lead to where you would think it would. Instead, it caused Komura to look inside himself and do a bit of soul-searching. He reflected on an issue he had with himself over the course of the volume and being that close to Mie helped bring him to a conclusion…. And that conclusion concludes our volume!
Characters
This volume was entirely focused on Mie x Komura and… this is weird to say… but this volume had next to zero development while taking big steps forward in their development. Yeah, that statement contradicts itself rather heavily but I’ll try to shed some light on what I mean by that.
Flat out, I’ll guess I’ll have to semi-spoil things to get my point across but in the case of there not being any development, I mean that if you were expecting Komura and Mie to officially become a couple… they don’t. So, in that regard to their blossoming relationship, neither one of them went anywhere. In Komura’s case, we already knew that he realized his feelings for Mie and that she was in love with her… so that’s why we all thought that the confession was going to happen. Here, he still realizes his love for her but with the confession not happening, Komura didn’t progress any further on his own…
But…
Komura did take a bit step forward and progressed in an entirely new way. Throughout the volume, he had this self-confidence issue. After seeing a reflection of himself after his two-day study marathon, he thought he looked terrible and felt that he didn’t have anything to offer… especially to Mie. This became the major roadblock for him when it came to confessing his feelings. He simply felt as if he wasn’t worthy of Mie.
Throughout the volume, he reflected on this until he finally came to a conclusion. That conclusion is going to lead us into the next volume where summer break has not ended yet (unless the manga decides to do a time skip). Because of this decision, it’s safe to say that a confession may still be on the table but, then again, the chances that it may remain off the table also drastically increased, too. So, if it’s now a 50/50 shot, then how did Komura progress? Well, once you read his decision, you’ll get a clearer picture of what I mean by that. It made it seem like a whole new chapter is about to begin… but what’s interesting is that while this volume had Mie and Komura together, everything was focused on Komura and we didn’t get a single hint as to how Mie felt this whole time.
I just thought that was an interesting observation.
Final Thoughts
I think we were all expecting a confession in this volume and, in most cases, I would have thrown my arms into the air and ranted about how they’re taking forever, how it’s the classic stalling technique to induce frustration, etc. etc.; however, with the way this entire situation was handled, I’m perfectly okay with it. Despite things not moving forward, Komura was able to in his own way and that’s why I said that it felt as if a big step forward was taken even though the overall path remained in the same spot.
As for the plot of this book, there wasn’t much to it. It can be summed up as “Mie and Komura went to the aquarium on their summer break.” There’s only so much one can do at the aquarium. If you guessed that they went there to look at fish, then you pretty much figured out 90% of the chapters in this book. Of course, there was a little bit more to it than that which made something rather mundane seem interesting but, in the end, they looked at fish all day, took a train home, and Komura had a lightbulb moment.
Even with the plot being as shallow as it was, it was still fun, entertaining, and insanely cute. I know a lot of people liked to criticize Komura as a character based on the anime adaptation but I think he took some steps in this volume to break that perception of him. He may not be a deep philosophical thinker when it comes to romance but he is rather self-aware and, therefore, knows what he needs to work on to be a better person. It was nice seeing him do all of this on his own. Not many characters can figure stuff out like this without outside influence. It’s a bit refreshing to see Komura get it done by himself! Now we’ll have to see if we get Mie’s side of things in the next volume if we get a time skip, or if we get another summer vacation adventure!
