Valve just knocked it out of the park (again) by announcing that anyone who owns a Meta Quest, 2, 3, and Pro VR Headset can now wirelessly stream VR games via its VR Steam Link application. This is wonderful news, and it’s about this happened, as I hated using the blasted USB cable.
However, before you go shouting for joy, there are a few caveats to make this work. First, you must ensure your Wi-Fi is up to the task, and Steam Link to Meta Quest must have at least a 5 GHz connection. If you only have a 2.4 GHz, it won’t be able to provide the required bandwidth for an optimal experience. You also must be running at least Windows 10, which means all people who are still running Windows 8 need not apply. Finally, you’ll need at least an Nvidia GTX 970 or better. Sadly, AMD’s GPUs won’t work with this.
If you have all of that, download the Steam Link app from Valve’s website, which will walk you through the process of getting this all sorted out. Valve has also listed the steps and some helpful times on its website.
I haven’t tried this yet, but as soon as I get a free moment, I’ll test this out to see how well it works. If I can play Steam VR games without a cable anymore, that’s even closer to a tether-less experience, and that’s why I purchased the Meta Quest VR 2 (and 3) in the first place.
It’s also pretty cool that this update was released right in time for the upcoming “VR Fest” from Steam, which will run from December 4th to December 11th, 2023. During this event, some of the bigger VR games on Steam, including Tetris Effect: Connect, Elite Dangerous, Breachers, and Among Us VR, will be up for sale.
