Capcom released a video with everyone’s favorite Cash Money rapper, Lil Wayne, taking on the game that he was called upon to headline a showcase for many months ago. Yes, Lil Wayne is actually playing Street Fighter 6, courtesy of IGN.
“Now, here’s some footage of me doing what I do in Street Fighter 6“, the rapper said in the video now featured on Capcom’s Facebook page. Lil Wayne(or Weezy as his CFN) goes through World Tour mode with his avatar, wandering through Metro City on his own. Then, he’s seen in the battle hub, trying to stunt in the customization section. Lil Wayne isn’t afraid of the streets. Especially going to put himself through the classic Final Fight. Weezy is seen taking in Arcade mode with a Modern Control Scheme Ryu. His fight with a Level 5 (CPU) Ken had him on the ropes after it performed with Shippu Jirai Kyaku, before he clapped back with a Shin Shoryuken to finish the fight.
Hip Hop and Street Fighter Over The Years
Hip Hop Culture and Street Fighter have always been intertwined since the beginning and continued over the years. The tie-in especially hit differently in the 80s and 90s periods. The series started in 1987 with the graffiti logo to start for the intro. In 1997, Street Fighter III made it to the arcades with some background soundtracks that showed a heavy influence from hip-hop in both New Generation and 2nd Impact. Jazzy New York’s 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike variations have been more geared to the genre than other songs.
Capcom had also brought in Canadian hip-hop artist Infinite to be the announcer and produce a few tracks for Third Strike. His vocals can be heard in the Player Select and intro theme.
Street Fighter V and 6’s logos are inspired by graffiti. The in-game features are nods to it—especially the paint effect when a Drive Rush hits.
It didn’t stop there. The Street Fighter live-action movie (1994) included a soundtrack with the likes of Nas, LL Cool J, and MC Hammer. The MC Hammer / Deon Sanders track from that album hit the hardest for me. The video was the icing on the cake, with a multi-level bar holding Shadowloo and UN forces in a standoff, a sumo ring, a bike lane, and… backup dancers.
Just recently, Nicki Minaj released a song named Chun-Li as a homage to the alleged Strongest Woman in The World, the first lady of Street Fighter, and her leg game. Whether it hit the mark is another story. Lupe Fiasco also challenged Street Fighter legend Daigo Umehara to a Street Fighter V set many moons ago.
Street Fighter 6 has been said to carry the tradition with the graffiti artwork and soundtrack. In fact, Not On The Sidelines is a rap song for the game.
