If you’ve been out there enjoying Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, you’re not alone. The game has been charming many people since its release on PS5 a few weeks ago, and the game is already the best-selling 1st-party title on the PS5. Insomniac Games put tons of love into the game, and it shows. But, naturally, people are wondering about the future of the franchise. While we won’t spoil everything that happens in the game, we will say that the OTHER symbiote character was showcased, and Carnage could be a part of the future, but there’s a reason he wasn’t in the present.
That reason was revealed by Narrative Director Ben Arfmann, who revealed to io9 that the team knew they had to have Cletus Kasady in the game, but that Venom was the focus:
“Early on, we knew that we wanted to tell a great Venom story. Anything that would distract from that wasn’t on brand, but at the same time, we’re huge fans of Carnage and Cletus Kasady. We didn’t want to shortchange that story by not giving it full service. At least in this game, we got to introduce our version of Cletus and also do some work on the relationship between Peter and Yuri Watanabe, who’s now become Wraith. If we’re gonna dive into that Carnage storyline, we want to make sure to really give it everything that it deserves.”
Another team member noted that they wanted to ensure that every villain in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 wasn’t “one dimensional,” and that’s why they teased Carnage without stating that he’s the next big villain. Will we get a third game? Only Insomniac Games knows (or will know) how that story will go down.
