Not only a streaming service for TV and film, Netflix has taken a foray into the world of games. And one long-anticipated title will arrive on the streaming service this summer. Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, will come to Netflix on July 12th. Players will also be able to get their hands on the spooky sequel for PlayStation, Switch, and PC.
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals serves as a sequel to the 2016 mystery game by Night School Studio. In the original, players step into the shoes of Alex, a teenager investigating an allegedly haunted island with her peers. The old-school-styled adventure game has players investigating the otherworldly happenings around the island.
Those who haven’t played the original won’t have to in order to jump into the sequel, though they really should. Oxenfree II will use the same gameplay mechanics of choosing dialogue in conversations for different endings, while interacting with objects and puzzles. That said, it has an entirely new protagonist in Riley, a research assistant looking to electromagnetic waves. The setting and story will prove new as well.
The official description of the game highlights the new narrative, though does seem to suggest a potential crossover:
OXENFREE II: Lost Signals is the mind-bending follow-up to the critically-acclaimed narrative adventure game OXENFREE from Night School Studio. Play it as a standalone story or dive deeper by playing the original – it’s up to you. As you play, you’ll shape every step of the story through your choices. How you choose to deal with the supernatural events at hand will forever alter the future.
It speaks to the acclaim for the original game that various companies have showcased the sequel. Sony originally announced the sequel for PlayStation, while Nintendo shared the release date this year. And now Netflix, which acquired Night School Studio, has posited Oxenfree II front and center for its summer game releases. In the meantime, Netflix subscribers can check out the first game on mobile.
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals will arrive on July 12th for PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, and on Netflix for mobile devices.
