The Story
Here in Volume 7, we dive right into the class camping trip! The camping trip consists of a courage walk where they have to walk through the woods at night and get scared by ghosts (who are their classmates just dressed up). Of course, everyone gets separated and as you would expect, Shiraishi ends up finding Kubo. Shiraishi brings her back to camp where they talk and learn some things about one another. This is before Sudo and the others (who were spying on them from afar) rejoin them.
From there, they all make curry together and are looking forward to the grand finale which is a big bonfire…. That didn’t happen because rain happened instead. With that out of the way, they are all looking forward to summer break and decide to hang out together all summer. Before that happens, Shiriashi returns home and is bombarded by cuteness incarnate…. Aka… Seita. Seita is happy to see his “big bwuva” before his thoughts turn to ice cream. His mother hands him a good deed card and tells him that if he can collect 5 good deed stamps, he can get “ice cweam!”
The first deed was pure child exploitation as his mom asked him to give her a massage. Hey, a free stamp is a free stamp! After that, Shiraishi takes him out where he ends up collecting all of his stamps! Finally, we return to school where an emergency befalls them. They were all looking forward to spending summer break together but they realize that their exams are coming up and if they don’t pass them, they’ll be spending summer together in a whole unintended way…. In summer school! Study arc GO!
Characters
The Shiraishi x Kubo situation got another nudge in the right direction. The camping trip was cute and brought them closer together but a small filler chapter in between did some wonders for them. Shiraishi had the hiccups… for over an hour! To help him, Kubo said that she was going to scare him but when she tried, her face was a mere inch away from Shiraishi’s! It cured him of the hiccups but it also made Shiraishi comment that he thought his heart was going to stop! D’awww!
Outside of this, there really wasn’t much in the way of development but there didn’t have to be. The main focus of this series is the developing relationship between Shiraishi and Kubo and this volume did its job perfectly in that regard.
Final Thoughts
With the way things happened here, I’m sure we will kick it off with some hardcore studying next time. Of course, they’re all going to pass their exams because what fun would it be to see them all attend summer school? The only question that remains is if their summer break is going to become more memorable than they bargained for! I mean… there are only five volumes left so we are over that halfway mark… I can’t see them getting together in volume 8 but I sure can see the stars begin to align.
Maybe something is going to happen where Shiraishi will fully embrace his feelings and things get a bit awkward, leading to a volume filled with self-awareness… only for Kubo to take that same approach in volume 10! Then, Volume 11 can be spent with the two of them pondering how to ask each other out and then it finally happens in Volume 12? Sounds like a good armchair fantasy booking roadmap to me!
Let’s see how it plays out but for now, another cute edition that I hope gets animated and not delayed again!
