The Story
The second volume of The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses continues the episodic trend of Mie forgetting her glasses but there is a central theme built around every romance manga’s favorite holiday: Valentine’s Day. Before we get to that, there was a love letter written to Azuma; however, it ends up in Komura’s hands. Not knowing what it is, Mie volunteers herself to deliver it to Azuma! A little bit later, Azuma delivers his reply but because Mie forgot her glasses, she can’t read it… so she asks Komura to do the honors.
When Komura opens the reply and reads it to himself, he learns the one thing that we all felt deep in our hearts… Azuma is the real MVP! I’ll let you read it to find out why.
Now we get to Valentine’s Day. Komura wants Mie to give him chocolates but he’s unsure if he should tell her that. Turns out that he was going to get some anyway because Mie was planning on giving chocolates to all of her friends. This hits Komura a little hard because he realizes that she only sees him as a friend despite all of the things he did for her. Of course, he plays it off and says it’s fine. When it’s time for him to receive his chocolates, Mie realizes that she ran out and feels really bad.
White Day comes around and Komura wants to give her his thank you chocolate but Mie realized she gained a couple of pounds and is swearing off sweets! In fact, she enlists him as her temptation guardian and wants him to stop her whenever she’s about to cave and eat chocolate. In the end, she tries to eat a cough drop to substitute her cravings but she mistakes one of Azuma’s cookies for it. She keeps insisting on eating it not realizing what it is… so Komura tells her that if she’s going to eat it anyway then to eat his chocolate instead!
The volume ends with Mie remembering her glasses but Komura forgot his book! They share desks and it’s only then and there that Mie realizes that when their desks are pushed together, they are ultra close to each other!
Characters
We have a big moment with Komura but, perhaps, he wisely thought twice about it. Personally, I think it’s the right decision as all of the subtle nuances leading up to it clearly show that it wasn’t the right time… but he did make a promise so this is a plot point we are certain to circle back to in the future. Outside of that, it was really cute of him to get so worked up over Valentine’s Day. The fact that everyone around him realizes his crush and Mie doesn’t is still pretty hilarious… but at least we know that Komura is getting silently cheered on!
Mie hasn’t really changed in this volume. She’s still kind of clumsy and dimwitted.
Also… I have to repeat it… Azuma is the real MVP! He still hasn’t played a really large role so I’m assuming that he’s just going to be one of those background characters that gets called upon when needed… which is fine. I kind of like it when series such as this focus on their main characters.
Final Thoughts
I felt that the “forgot my glasses” gag would have worn out its welcome and I think feel that it has. There aren’t really any excuses being made anymore. The gag is simply “I forgot my glasses.” They’re not even given reasons for forgetting them anymore. I hate to think that they just “gave up” but it is what it is. Still, I don’t think it needs to be repeated at the start of every chapter. Even this early in, it’s a given that Mie is going to forget her glasses.
Forgetting them so often is a bit odd. I wonder if they are going to pull the power move of “I forgot them on purpose just so I could be close to you, Komura-kun”? That would be a nice little twist and definitely a huge “d’awww” moment. Although, with how dumb Mie is, I don’t really think she’s capable of pulling a power move like that. Could be wrong, though. Could it all be just one big misdirection?
This series just seems like a dosage of cuteness and I’m okay with that. Despite the overstayed welcome of the primary gag, there’s a lot of good here to make up for it and that’s good enough for me to keep on reading. Besides, it’s a really cut manga through and through and if you need a dose of cuteness, this series should satisfy you.
