The Story
With pick up in Volume 9 with the crisis on the luxury liner! Yor is still in battle while there is evidence of a bomb planted on the ship. Twilight sends Anya into a daycare center and heads off to dismantle the bomb; however, Anya escapes and overhears that there are more bombs on the ship. She does her best to alert people of their whereabouts in the cutest way possible. In the end, she played an instrumental part in saving the day! When they land on the resort island, they embark on a little bit of fun that leaves both Anya and Yor exhausted! Looks like Twilight has to carry the load again!
From here, we break into a couple of filler chapters. One of which deals with Twilight taking Bond for a walk and getting into a few adventures, another involves Franky giving assistance to Fiona Frost in getting some documents notarized with a forged seal, and the last sees Becky try to confess her love to Twilight… yes, you read that right.
Our final chapter takes us back to Eden academy where a brand-new enemy appears…. Mrs. Schlag… a member of the disciplinary committee who hands out Tonitrus Bolts to anyone for literally any reason. Smiling improperly, not having a handkerchief, just using the wrong wording when speaking… all of which and more will earn you a bolt! She catches Anya and her class and lines them up single file for bag inspection! Anya notices Damian is about to receive a bolt when she does something gutsy! Is Twilight’s operation heading for an unexpected turn?
Characters
The biggest development didn’t come until the final chapter and it involved Damian and Anya. While they didn’t instantly turn around and become friends, Anya’s gesture may have just been the spark that could kick off a really awkward and, possibly, regrettable friendship on Damian’s part. Either that, or it’ll grease the wheels with him just enough for Twilight to execute the backup portion of his plan which would circumvent the requirement of Anya becoming an Imperial Scholar. It’s a bit too early to tell if this is that spark or if it’s just a one-off tease but time will tell where this goes.
While I would call it character development, we did get a glimpse into Frankie’s life a bit. Fiona working with him is rather interesting, though. We’ll have to see where this goes (I’m betting on more one-off chapters for some more comedic relief).
Our new character, Mrs. Schlag…. Just wow. So, her whole motivation stems from the fact that there was a promising student that was about to become an imperial scholar and one day he forgot his handkerchief… so… he wiped his hands on his pants. Students made fun of him thinking that he peed himself when it was just water. Afterward, he turned to a delinquent life, joined some resistance group, and was never heard from again. Wow… that escalated quickly. So, she became a strict rule enforcer that makes tonitrus bolts rain from the heavens. She definitely poses a serious threat to Twilight’s mission!
Final Thoughts
This volume can be summed up in one word: Variety!
We had a nice conclusion to the luxury liner arc, we had some nice filler chapters that gave us a look at some of our other characters (along with a really weird one with Becky) and the continuation of the Eden Academy story which looks to have taken another turn. I wonder if we will pick up on this arc more in the next volume or if there is another big mission waiting for Twilight on the horizon.
Bond did get some time in the sun in this volume as well. Not to use a pun but a bond does seem to be forming between the dog and Twilight. Still, I liked how Twilight just came up with conclusion after conclusion to mask the fact that Bond can see the future. I mean, he’s a dog so he can’t really tell his secret to anyone. Makes you wonder if anyone aside from Anya will figure it out.
Overall, another good volume filled with entertainment. The fact that the daycare center on the ship was called the Waku Waku Kids Room… that made me facepalm and laugh at the same time. Well done!
