The Story
Here in Volume 6, we begin with the six-legged race at the Sports Day event! Sadly, the group comes in second but they vow to come in first next year. Later, Kubo goes on a scavenger hunt where the thing she has to find is a classmate. Three guesses who she picks and the first two don’t count.
With Sports Day over, it’s time for exams. Shiraishi is about to begin studying when Kubo unexpectedly shows up at his house. She ran into Shiraishi’s mom at the store and got invited over. They hit the books together and by the end of it, Shiraishi admits that he couldn’t concentrate. Looks like those feelings are starting to get to him!
Next, we head back to some episodic adventures involving coffee and staying up all night followed by a sleepover. This is all a prelude to the next story arc which will seem them going on a school camping trip. It’s decided that Shiraishi, Kubo, Tama, Sudo, and Hazuki will band together for the camping trip; however, Shiraishi and Kubo walk up to them and want to have a talk about it!
Characters
To be quite honest, there wasn’t much in the way of character development in this volume. Shiraishi still looks to be understanding his feelings for Kubo while Kubo is still doing whatever she can to be around Shiraishi. I don’t feel as if they took a single step forward but… a camping trip is on the horizon and we all know how these things go.
What was a minor piece of development was Sudo was able to find Shiraishi on his own. In fact, he was the one who overheard the two of them talking about the camping trip. Sudo, despite being Shiraishi’s friend, hadn’t been able to find him for a year straight. Suddenly, he was able to see him. I wonder if this marks a shift for Shiraishi himself or it proves that the closer you become to him as a friend, the more his “curse” dulls. It was a small but interesting tidbit.
Final Thoughts
Well, it was announced that the manga is coming to an end in Japan. We now know that there are twelve volumes in the series so that means here in the land of measuring things in a ratio of cheeseburgers to bald eagles, we are halfway through the series. Even still, volume seven should be focusing on their camping trip (or they spend the whole volume building up to it). Typically, we know that whenever there is a camping trip, or if there is some sort of adventure in a cabin, a few things tend to happen. Those things include getting lost with your love interest, confessing to your love interest, or doing a bunch of activities with your love interest that lead nowhere causing you to become frustrated and yell at the characters to just get into a room and boink already.
I predict that I’ll be yelling at the characters because, with five volumes still to go after the next, I can’t see them getting together that quickly. If they do; however, I would expect the rest of the series to focus on Shiraishi becoming more and more visible. Either that or we learn Shiraishi is actually dead, Kubo is insane, and everyone else is just playing along, enabling her insanity to continue. Now that would be quite the twist!
But no. I’m sure the main group will be able to see him and that will spiral outward to everyone else being able to see them and it’ll all be thanks to Kubo. In fact, I can just imagine the final chapter ending with Shiraishi thanking Kubo for everything she has done for him… all while never confirming the relationship, thus making me want to throw on Makka na Chikai and punch through rock.
